Chanterelles!

I knew there was some reason I moved back to the NorthWET.

Chanterelle mushrooms!

Early fall is chanterelle season in this part of the world. But I hadn’t planned on hunting the elusive little critters this year. Been way too busy. And chanterelles, though they can be plentiful when you find them, usually require serious finding.

But there I was, minding my own business, traipsing along a logging road with the dogs, and all these big, fat mushrooms were growing within about 10 feet of each other, shining like bright gold beacons not 20 feet off the road. The forest spirits must have been smiling on me. You don’t usually find a big patch of chanterelles next to a roadside, and chanterelles this large (some bigger than my fist) are often soggy and halfway around the bend. These are nice, firm, and meaty.

Mmmmm. I’m gonna make me some chanterelles and hazelnuts in a Madeira sauce. That is, if I can find my cookbooks among the stuff still to be unpacked. I don’t think the recipe’s online.

Oh. Wait a minute. Yes it is. It’s not only online, it’s online in a Backwoods Home article. Wouldn’t you know it?

That logging road sounds like a hidden gold mine for chanterelles — best keep its location a secret.

When you were in the desert, we didn’t make you eat fungus.
