Weekend links

  • In the wake of the foul jihadist murders in San Bernardino, we now have two new categories of weapons, according to politicians and the media. First comes “assault clothing” (H/T DB). Deadly outerwear is followed by “multi-automatic round weapons.” No word yet on what a M-ARW may be. Or on how clothing can kill. But be on the lookout for these new dangers. These are truly perilous times.
  • “When ‘suspected’ is close enough.” Scott H. Greenfield is a little behind the curve in some of his information here. But his heart and head are certainly in the right place (Tip o’ hat to S)
  • Is Gollum evil? A Turkish doctor’s freedom depends on the answer
  • I don’t agree with everything Ilana Mercer writes in this column. Doubt most of you will, either. But she does make some good points about the ineffectiveness of law enforcement in this age where spouting something politically incorrect may be “worse” than being a terrorist.
  • “Why Walking Helps Us Think.” While the article never really answers the “why” question, every ardent walker — particularly any who are also writers — will appreciate its sentiments. (H/T PT)
  • Finally, courtesy of jb, here’s a Christmas gift list as only Dave Barry could create it.

“Many experiments have shown that after or during exercise, even very mild exertion, people perform better…”

Walking, or any other physical exercise, most certainly has tremendous benefits in so many areas, but I’m glad that it is not limited to strenuous exercise. Many people are simply not able to engage in the strenuous type, and may not realize that they don’t need to walk miles or climb mountains to improve their cognition.

I was too fearful of falling to walk much for a long time, but I see definite improvement just since buying a walking stick… though I’m glad I don’t need to cope with that and a dog on a leash at the same time! We walk in our fenced yard. Me with the stick, and the dog running free. Doesn’t last long in the cold, but gets the blood running and makes the dog very happy indeed when I go out with him.

For those without a NYT login: Turkish doctor faces jail for comparing Erdogan, Gollum. What’s bizzare, to me anyway, is that the court has appointed a 5-member panel to analyze the question.

I don’t know what a ‘multi-automatic round’ weapon is, but if it scares the pee out of California pols, I want one! Really, I’m thinking of picking up another AR lower pretty soon, just cuz.

“Weaponizing” seems to be a popular buzzword. I guess it goes back to the process of making something useful as a weapon – I’m thinking aerosolizing biological or chemical agents. But I guess now it’s just like “assault”. That word used to have a more well-defined meaning. But I guess these days, with “micro-aggression” and “trigger warning” being something we’re supposed to be concerned about, utilitarian things, such as holsters and magazine pouches are now something for the pajama-boy class to get the vapors over.

So don’t sew a shoulder-thing that goes up onto your Underoos, or worse yet, attach it with velcro or Molle straps.

    There’s more from SHG:
The New York Times Puts Gun Control On A1

    He invites comments:

Since I can offer little on the question outside of my position on principle, not being knowledgeable, and given that I’ve limited discussion here up to now, maybe today is the right day to open the floor to anyone who has something to say. Go at it. For those of you who have been champing at the bit to express your views on guns, gun control, the Second Amendment and need to stop this “epidemic,” this is your opportunity to express your views.

The floor is open. Now it’s up to you.

S — Thanks for trying to link to me and being so gentlemanly when he smacked you down. Your long response was very good.

I like SHG’s writings, but he’s very adversarial in dealing with individuals, isn’t he? That’s a lawyer there, that is.

Claire, sorry about my deleting the link to you, but the no link policy has been a staple for a very long time, and has proven to prevent a great deal of mischief. It had nothing to do with you. And ST’s long comment contributed greatly to the discussion, and is appreciated.

Thank you, shg! I definitely understand the no-link policy and don’t take it personally at all. Good of your to come here and say that. I always appreciate your writings.

🙂 Hm. I dunno, Bear. That still looks more cylindrical than round to me. But I’ll agree it’s probably multi-automatic. 😉

Adam — I saw that headline earlier but couldn’t bring myself to click on the article. For an administration that was supposed to be so young and hip and cool and groovy, I can’t believe how utterly tone deaf, insensitive to the mood of the country, and intolerant of differences the Obamaites are.

Well, yes, I can believe it. But …

ADDED: What she later said (article update) about the San Bernardino murders being “a wonderful opportunity” is sickening. Wow. And she’s more afraid of angry rhetoric than she is of crazed religionists going around committing mass murder??? These people are bad beyond words.

I think the term “multi-automatic” should imply some sort of sooper extra functionality. Maybe the continuous onslaught of hot lead is encased in a plasma stream directed at the target, and it has a scalp massage attachement.

My theory is that Johnny carries the gun, and it takes the army to carry the ammo.

If you wonder how clothing can be lethal then clearly you never spent any time in clubs during the late 80’s/ early 90’s. & you should be grateful for that…

“Like, Ohmigawd – I can’t believe she’s wearing, like, that tiger striped belt with that, like, zebra striped spandex sleeveless jumpsuit!”

As for the type of weapon described…

I knew this fella once that had a multi-automatic, hyper capacity semi clip thoroughgauge with a custom silk trigger, platinum sight & auto target adjust. Called it Lilly. He told me it had a sister name ‘o Vera…

So glad I got to read Dave Barry’s gift list. I needed the laughs. I have no idea why anyone would want to wash a cat. My brother in law tried it once, and spent three days in a hyperbaric chamber after the scratches on his arm became infected. And he never got the cat anywhere near the water, trust me. As for the Bumpy berry thing, it might be great for city folk in crowded subways, but I think it would be a real pain in the butt to draw your gun from under it if you discovered you needed it.

Amazon.com truly does carry everything these days, doesn’t it. LOL

S- Bravo Sir! or Ma’am. Excellent essay/writeup. Best in terms of being detailed and succinct while excluding emotion that i have read in decades.
