  • Uber and Lyft are not just disrupting longstanding “taxi control” in New York City. They’re disrupting lenders who have profited from the insane medallion fees.
  • Ha ha ha. You know all those well-heeled people who are always spouting about how everybody should pay higher taxes? Well guess what happens when they’re invited to volunteer more of their own dough?
  • This planet’s a crazy place. When it’s time to leave, is it feasible to terraform Mars? 14 Comments
  • Mm-mmm good!

One day while staying at the monastery, I left to run errands and came across this strawberry stand. That’s all it sold. Just strawberries — straight from the field behind the tiny booth. On the outward leg, I noticed the place was mobbed. Half the residents of the area seemed to be there, not just buying pints but flats and flats. On the inbound leg, all the local residents seemed to be there. It took five or six clerks crammed inside the tiny stand to wait on everybody. I stopped and picked up a half-flat for the nuns. When they…

    Doings at the Cabal

Cabalistas (or people who might want to be): For those who haven’t visited the Cabal in a while, our community is growing and we have a little something for everybody going on in current discussions. A sampling: We’ve got a thread on “things made with milk” (with the biggest thing being cheese, but plenty of related items, as well); there’s a discussion on the meaning of survival, both in terms of “survivalism” and in terms of life; and we’re extremely fortunate to be getting lessons in the art of statement analysis, a powerful technique for determining the truthfulness (or not)…

  • I sincerely doubt the world is ready for a complicated waterless toilet that has to be professionally serviced every six months. Bill and Melinda Gates disagree.
  • Thank you, New Yorker, for being realistic enough to recognize the hand of ISIS at Ohio State.
  • Will it really be “Bye Bye, Obamacare” followed by something much closer to market-based insurance? We can hope. Tom Price is one of only two Trump picks so far that don’t just seem like authoritarian business as usual. 16 Comments
  • A Sunday ramble

Good riddance, Fidel So one of the world’s most long-surviving dictators has died, too late for his corpsification to do anybody any good. I was amazed by some of the glowing “official” responses to Fidel Castro’s belated kicking of the bucket, particularly the now-infamous proclamation by Canada’s latest infestation of Trudeau, Justin. I knew he was far left. But frankly, I didn’t believe you northern types when you said he was such a complete moron. Consider yourselves vindicated. Trudeau’s excuse-making for monsters has even spawned a blackly hilarious #TrudeauEulogies hastag on Twitter and Gab. Which even MacLeans noticed. Even the…

    A small, light moment

Who even knew that these were growing in my yard? I rescued them this morning from a tangle of blackberries, wild rose bushes, and twisty morning glory vines. Not that they needed rescue. They were doing quite fine before I reached them. My kind of flowers. Independent. Take care of themselves. Survivors. Then I go and kill three of their blossoms. Bad human. The lilies submitted quietly, but the blackberries and rose bushes fought back and maimed me. So floral justice was served.

    Weekend links

You recall DiFi’s insane and impossible encryption bill? Well, the second draft is out and it’s gotten even worse. These loons actually believe if you simply order someone to do the impossible, it must be done. Being so right and so wrong at the same time. Yes, it’s getting scary out there. Yes, it’s amazing how fast it’s happening. But no, it’s not caused by the mysterious collapse of Francis Fukuyama-style “liberalism” nor is it because the ordinary processes of civilization are too commonplace and boring. Legalization is back on the ballot in Maine. Two interesting takes on the transgender…
