- Amish man sues to buy firearms without photo ID.
- Those secretive, usually warrantless stingray units? Turns out they can record the content of phone calls; not just act as a locator. (H/T MJR)
- Liberalthink: We MUST have the $15/hour minimum wage even if it puts people out of work.
- The news just gets more dire for Obamacare’s race to the bottom.
- Kevin Wilmeth asks, “How cool is Marilyn Williams?”, who defended her home with a precision air rifle (aka “sniper rifle” to the media).
- I’m not sure how the term “social justice warriors” (SJW) came into such popular use. But I don’t like it. It’s too easy for the SJWs themselves to see that as a good thing. I think we should use a term nobody could learn to love (and a more accurate term, besides): pecksniffians.
🙂 I have harbored the same reservation about SJW, even though I have lately used it. After all, we didn’t coin the term “gun nut.” We simply adopted it with pride.
It’s funny how many long-used political labels started out as pejoratives, but were adopted by the intended victims.
That’s too Dickensian. “Retararded A-holes” seems a better descriptor.
Combine the two: Social Justice Pecksniffians. Sounds hilarious, and laughing at idiots is always amusing.
Why am I not surprised that Stingrays can actually record voice and text? Otherwise it wouldn’t be so difficult to pry details on this piece of technology out of the government. Now we need someone to develop some sort of feedback system which blows up the damn things!
Re the article on Marilyn Williams: I loved the last line: “Pay attention, girls. This is what empowerment looks like.” Exactly.
While we’re on the subject of guns, I see that some enterprising congressman has introduced a bill to remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act. http://americansuppressorassociation.com/asa-announces-hearing-protection-act-a-bill-to-remove-suppressors-from-the-nfa/ Suppressors are better than ordinary hearing protectors and, I understand, are common in Europe. I’d love to see them become normal equipment in the US, too.
“Pecksniffian” is wonderful, with the added spice that people who are not as culturally-gifted as they think they are will see the word as a sexual slur of some sort, probably the same ones who find racism in “niggardly”.
I’ve always used everyone’s nasty snoopy “neighbor” Mrs. Grundy to stand for the SJW sorts, but I can’t even remember where it came from so it would seem I need to update this. Pecksniffian sounds good, but if we put our minds to it I suspect we could come up with lots of others. 🙂
Good clean fun.
Amusingly, the term “Pecksniffian Cant” is banned from use in the British Parliament.
http://boingboing.net/2012/05/27/peckniffian-cant-banned-in-par.html
Um… as a telecom tech, I always assumed Stingrays could do that. The whole point is that they can receive and read the datastream, of which voice/text is a part. Basdically, they’re the telephonic equivalent of the NSA bulk collecting email but claiming to only read the headers.
So far as I knew — from where I first encountered SJW — I thought the snowflakes created the term themselves. But all the sane people, noting the rather obvious irony of ‘warrior snowflakes’ grabbed it for its derogatory value.

Yup. Precisely. So I’m thinking that, between what you and Kent said they’ll be “social justice pecksniffs” from now on (thinking about it, I believe pecksniff is the correct noun form, with pecksniffian being only an adjective, as in “pecksniffian cant” 🙂 )
Linky day!
http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=6895 — ESR on Obama. Just blunt. And true.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/strengthening-diffie-hellman-ssh-and-tls — and don’t forget that EFF article from a couple days ago either.
Somewhere, in the past few days (possibly, even right here), I encountered a link referring to license plate scanners being open on the internet. Hmmm. ( /me goes to look around) …

These bloggers I’m reading need to let up on the air guns, flashlights, and knives. My gear/gadget junkie itch is getting catalyzed. 😉
And, here’s another crypto hardening article:

Okay, I hadn’t heard of “pecksniffian” before, but will definitely start using that somehow. The definition is perfect; I’ve grown to be far less offended by the actual hoplophobia, any more, than by the utterly unearned self-righteous sanctimony with which it is usually delivered.
My dad used to sit around reading the dictionary. To give him his due, though, he regularly kicked my butt at Scrabble. (I can’t recall his having ever used pecksniffian.)
I just browsed through some previous “words of the day” from that dictionary site. I think “pecksniffian kakistocracy” describes our government pretty well.
Obamacare was designed to fail for a reason – to usher in socialized medicine. When the premiums get outrageously high along with the deductibles, then everyone will be willing to have the government take over the mess. That is the plan. I see it coming no matter which awful person is elected next year. As a pragmatist Trump would go for it and Hitlery wanted it from way back. Another nail in the coffin of our freedom.
A girl must have permission to have her life saved.

Hope someone hires the guy.
Although I can understand being afraid of liability, still… when something like this happens and there’s no time, that’s the time to step in.
Ellendra has nailed it! Although I also like the word “pharisaical”.
Jim B. — How contemptible (and how bureaucratic) that they’d suspend someone for trying to save a life. Oh well, as long as “procedures were followed …”
I hope Mr. Hertzler wins his case – but if I had to bet on it, I’d bet not. I expect the circuit court will uphold his prohibition, and I doubt the SCOTUS that we have today will touch the case. It’s not in the general interest of the progressive agenda. BUT, a win could be used to force gun sales to burka wearing women without a facial picture as well (also part of the progressive agenda I suspect), so this will further the arming of terrorists if he does win. But as I said – I hope he does win as the man deserves to own a gun just like the rest of us deserve that. And I for one will shoot any burka with a gun, so picture or not I don’t really care. burka-burka-burka. Kind of the sound my AK makes….
No surprise the stingrays can record calls, is it? Not really.
Well, so the folks who’re going to make $15 an hour can help the rest of us pay for the welfare that will be given to those who lose their jobs. More conservatives on the way!!! Newly minted from old SNAP vouchers no less.
Obama care really is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? Sort of like the breeding alien in that Alien movie – just keeps popping out surprises.
And I suspect Marilyn could have scared off those turkeys with a hammer if that had been all she had at hand.
and social justice warriors? Wouldn’t ‘angry parasites’ be a better term? It’s at least more honest….
Bringing things down a couple of notches so everyone get the message, I prefer “undereducated whiner” or “professional whiner” depending on the target.
I always thought “mouthbreathing harpy” to be fine designation, but it’s gender specific.

Yeah, if you aren’t doing anything, then you must be up to something!
Still Hating Obama Care! Our insurance rates will go up another 20% this year. Our deductible and out of pocket expenses are higher too. The meager amount of drug coverage our plan has only allows me to get my one medication filled every 30 days. You can’t be prepared and only pick-up meds month to month. So I pay for a 3 month supply out of pocket (which all they can give me now). I used to be able to pick up a years supply. Were talking about thyroid replacement hormone not a controlled drug…..oh, I forgot almost all drugs are controlled now.
On another note. All Hydrocodone products are now CII, which means they are in the same controlled drug class as Morphine, Ketamine and Fentanyl. As a Dr. this means I would have to write a new prescription every thirty days for cough syrup for a 4# chihuahua with collapsing trachea. Oh and by the way, the state and DEA track every script I write. This week I had to change that sweet little dog that belongs to a 90+ year old lady to a more potent codeine cough syrup so she could get a 3 month supply and her family doesn’t have to run all over town monthly to get her dogs meds every 30 days. Now she has to try to administer 0.2ml a very small amount from a very small syringe. Her chances of over dosing her dog just went way up. That just irks me!
“Obamacare was designed to fail for a reason – to usher in socialized medicine.”
No doubt that is the plan, but you seem to be worrying about closing the barn door after the horses have fled. Fascist healthcare ain’t much (if any) better than socialist healthcare. It’s already a government system. No real loss of liberty to go from one to another…
Anyway there are doctors out there who work on a cash basis only, no insurance at all – and there likely will start to be many more soon. Take a look at this (I wish she was my doctor):

Tom also pointed me at this book, which I am now reading:

Ref the paramedic: “No one at the school was renering first aid,” he said.
For a student choking to death? WTF! No school nurse, no teachers with CPR?
Here’s a case where I could justify some Zero Tolerance.
Dang, that linked post about Marilyn Williams is sure a nice read. I really dig Kevin Wilmeth’s presentation of ideas there, I’m gonna have to peruse that blog a little more.
