{"id":11220,"date":"2012-09-09T12:04:31","date_gmt":"2012-09-09T19:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/ClaireWolfe\/?p=11220"},"modified":"2012-09-09T12:04:31","modified_gmt":"2012-09-09T19:04:31","slug":"apple-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairewolfe.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/09\/apple-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you who care (and I suspect it&#8217;s a minority, although you&#8217;ve also been an extremely helpful minority), I think the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/ClaireWolfe\/2012\/08\/14\/hey-you-friendly-orchardists\/\" target=\"_blank\">apple tree in my backyard<\/a> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/grousemtfarm.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/03\/newtown-pippins\/\" target=\"_blank\">newtown pippin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gads, there are zillions of apple varieties! And apparently very few people curious about them. (When I put the most relevant discriptive terms into startpage, my own August blog entry popped to the top of the results. Very helpful, that. \ud83d\ude09 ) <\/p>\n<p>But newtown pippin is what fits best, even though I can&#8217;t decide whether the aroma <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newtown_Pippin\" target=\"_blank\">is piney<\/a>. Or not piney. Piney? Who knew that apples had their own version of wine snobs? Turns out apples can also have &#8220;vanilla overtones&#8221; or a &#8220;distinct flavor of cloves.&#8221; And here all these years I just thought they tasted and smelled like apples.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, that&#8217;s about the best possible apple I could have inherited. It&#8217;s a late-harvest, ideal-keeper type that gets better after months of storage. It&#8217;s well-reputed for drying or cider &#8212; and it just happens to be exactly the sort of tart, firm apple I prefer. <\/p>\n<p>Thank you again, brilliant commentariat, for your help on my search.
