Getting interesting for the hoplophobes today.<\/p>\n<p>The turncoat Gottlieb has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/article\/ccrkba-pulls-support-for-manchin-toomey?cid=db_articles\" target=\"_blank\">turned coat in another direction<\/a>. He&#8217;s withdrawn his support for Manchin-Toomey because, you know, those bad, bad politicians weren&#8217;t <i>faaaaaaaiiiiir<\/i> to him. They <i>uuuuuuuuused<\/i> him.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah. Like somebody who&#8217;s been in the lobbying biz for decades would be so very shocked at that.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.marketwatch.com\/election\/2013\/04\/17\/ayotte-no-seems-to-spell-defeat-for-manchin-toomey-background-check-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Manchin-Toomey going down the tubes<\/a>, the R-party has felt the need to rush in with a last-minute substitute <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/about\/upload\/HEN13499.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">proposal (pdf) from Chuck Grassley, Ted Cruz, et al.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s slightly longer than the M-T botch and I haven&#8217;t read it with a magnifying glass. But despite the verbage about universal <del datetime=\"2013-04-17T19:22:41+00:00\">registration<\/del> background checks in the bill title (which I believe is just an artifact referring to the original bill, which this proposes to amend), quick searches using the terms &#8220;background,&#8221; &#8220;NICS,&#8221; and &#8220;transfer&#8221; show no ban on private sales.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t quote me on that; wait &#8217;til the Second Amendment lawyers weigh in. I&#8217;m an amateur at bill reading and one of my life&#8217;s goals is to remain one. Do love political theatrics, though.<\/p>\n<p>This is turning into quite the drama. Not to mention putting the word <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cloture\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;cloture&#8221;<\/a> back in our vocabularies for the first time since high school civics class.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><b>UPDATE:<\/b> It looks as if everything &#8212; everything! &#8212; the gun banners want <a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2013\/04\/17\/open-thread-senate-gun-control-vote-a-rama\/\" target=\"_blank\">is getting voted down<\/a>. That link is to an open thread with updates and who voted for what. <\/p>\n<p>Even the R&#8217;s last-minute substitute bill collapsed. In several cases, Dems (particularly from the don&#8217;t-touch-my-guns states like Montana and Alaska) voted against gun control in significant numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Reid will almost certainly pull the whole freakin&#8217; mess.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean universal gun-buyer registration is dead.
