It doesn&#8217;t merely <em>appear<\/em> to be growing. It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldaffairsjournal.org\/blog\/michael-j-totten\/liberal-democracy-and-its-discontents\" target=\"_blank\">scarily is<\/a>. (H\/T RG)\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nraila.org\/articles\/20160812\/symbolic-gesture-illustrates-idiocy-of-background-check-law\" target=\"_blank\">Absurdities<\/a> of background check laws.\n<li>Speaking of cruelly absurd laws, here&#8217;s a test that&#8217;s been around a while (courtesy of Joe Huffman), but it a good one to keep in mind. Would proposed new law X, Y, or Z pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/scrosnoe.wordpress.com\/2016\/08\/16\/the-jews-in-the-attic-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jews in the attic test<\/a>?\n<li>The DOJ is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-department-of-justice-is-ending-the-use-of-private-prisons-2016-8\" target=\"_blanK\">ending the use of private prisons<\/a> after a scathing <a href=\"https:\/\/oig.justice.gov\/reports\/2016\/e1606.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report (pdf)<\/a> found them dangerous to both prisoners and guards. (Outsourcing statism also outsources accountability.)\n<li>A mayor (Republican, says the <i>WaPost<\/i> in shock), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/inspired-life\/wp\/2016\/08\/11\/this-republican-mayor-has-an-incredibly-simple-idea-to-help-the-homeless-and-it-seems-to-be-working\/\" target=\"_blank\">helps the homeless<\/a> and the community, as well. (Okay, he does it with taxpayers&#8217; money, but still this is creative problem solving.)\n<li>But of course the bold volunteer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/16\/us\/louisiana-flooding\/\" target=\"_blank\">help of neighbors<\/a> is best of all. (After the horror stories from Katrina about desperate people being forced &#8212; by government rescuers &#8212; to abandon or even kill their pets, it&#8217;s especially heartening to see these boatloads of dogs, cats, sheep, and goats.)\n<li>You see, Joel. They <a href=\"http:\/\/joelsgulch.com\/all-these-dog-studies-discovering-all-these-obvious-things\/\" target=\"_blank\">don&#8217;t love us <i>only<\/i><\/a> because we have opposable thumbs and can openers. Sometimes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seeker.com\/would-your-dog-choose-praise-over-food-1976786575.html\" target=\"_blank\">they just love us<\/a>.\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<li>Authoritarianism.
