I&#8217;m surprised at the number of readers who write me using Gmail or Yahoo addresses, knowing that all correspondence is scanned for advertising and data mining purposes. Other than people who are already inclined to be nerdy, few people seem to use VPNs, proxy services, or TOR for browsing. A core group of my correspondents encrypt their emails, but most &#8230; nope. <\/p>\n<p>At most, people may use an ad blocker or a pop-up blocker on their browser. Which is something. But barely a beginning. <\/p>\n<p>I could be wrong on this. But my impression is that even dedicated freedomistas aren&#8217;t that &#8220;into&#8221; online security. And those gmail addresses and unencrypted messages confirm it.<\/p>\n<p>So my question is: why? <strong><strong>If you are not a dedicated online &#8220;security freak,&#8221; why are you not?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is it because it&#8217;s impossible to keep up with security in a rapidly changing online world?<\/p>\n<p>Because you &#8220;have nothing to hide&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Because all things computerish are a mystery to you?<\/p>\n<p>Because you have better things to do?<\/p>\n<p>Because you believe that mysterious &#8220;they&#8221; will find out everything you&#8217;re up to, no matter what you do?<\/p>\n<p>Tell me!<\/p>\n<p>I should note that this is not a judgment against anybody. I believe I don&#8217;t do enough for online security myself. Even though I do enough that my online experience is sometimes crippled by the security measures I have in place, I find myself not keeping up with the latest developments. I find myself rolling my eyes over the idea that I have to go out and *&#038;^%$#@ing do more than I&#8217;ve already done and keep track of stuff I can barely understand.
