Mine was this fabulous, huge salad with sliced chicken breast and candied pecans sitting atop every conceivable type of fresh green, fresh vegetable, and pepper. It came with a honey mustard dressing that made me want to lick my fingers.

The restaurant was right on the water. Seriously ON the water. Not on land. Actually on stilts over the water.

I noticed when we came in that part of the floor near the entrance was made of glass. When we were leaving, I peered down and saw these guys:

I’m sorry; I know it’s hard to tell what you’re looking at, but those are three sea lions snuggled together on the understructure of the building. Two smaller, darker ones resting their heads on one great big light gray one, all three happily snoozing. If you click to embiggenate you can see the two whiskered noses pointing toward each other.

This is where the post headline comes in. If only somebody would have told me I’d be standing in a well-lighted place, shooting down into a dark place through black glass with salt spatters on it and restaurant lights reflecting off that … well, I’d have done some research and found out how to make that shot.

You’ll just have to trust me that the big marine mammals were as cute as puppies. No better on the sea lions, I’m afraid, but it gives a little context.

It rained on and off all day. On the way home, it hailed on us so long and so hard we had to pull over to the side of the road. It was merely mini-hail, which is the only kind we ever get here. No midwestern golf balls or car-denting baseballs. But it was coming down like thunder. By the time the hail finally eased up, the road was white and crunchy.

This doesn’t show the big drama, but if you look closely you’ll see the white streaks coming down outside the window.

After that, we stopped and got ourselves pumpkin spice lattes and wandered home to our own puppies.
