In just over a week, the residents of Deerfield, Illinois, will be required to turn in all<\/a>:<\/p>\n

… semiautomatic rifles with a fixed magazine and a capacity to hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, shotguns with revolving cylinders, and conversion kits from which assault weapons can be assembled. And … all the following models or duplicates thereof: AK, AKM, AKS, AK-47, AK-74, ARM, MAK90, Misr, NHM 90, NHM 91, SA 85, SA 93, VEPR, AR-10, AR-15, Bushmaster XM15, Armalite M15, Olympic Arms PCR, AR70, Calico Liberty, Dragunov SVD Sniper Rifle, Dragunov SVU, Fabrique NationalFN\/FAL, FN\/LAR, FNC, Hi-Point Carbine, HK-91, Kel-Tec Sub Rifle, SAR-8, Sturm, Ruger Mini-14, and more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes, “sniper rifles” and “assault weapons” right down to the venerable Mini-14 plinker. And the fines for non-compliance are enormous.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Deerfield has made the news for a colossal act of exclusionary prejudice. In the civil rights era, the leafy suburb was called “The Little Rock of the North” for its successful effort to shut down a housing development<\/a> merely because some homes might be sold to black people. Not only did they halt the development; they snatched up the land for public parks and city officials managed to get their hands on the two model homes that had already been built (at what I’m guessing were bargain rates).<\/p>\n

So bigotry is nothing new for the village (and, it seems likely, neither is corruption). <\/p>\n

Now, Deerfield’s 18,000 residents are faced with a choice: Turn in their guns or pay fines in the range of $1,000 a day — IF they’re ever caught. What should they do? Or rather, what will<\/em> they do?<\/p>\n
