{"id":4896,"date":"2011-03-25T03:12:07","date_gmt":"2011-03-25T10:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/ClaireWolfe\/?p=4896"},"modified":"2011-03-25T03:12:07","modified_gmt":"2011-03-25T10:12:07","slug":"a-different-view-on-pink-guns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairewolfe.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/25\/a-different-view-on-pink-guns\/","title":{"rendered":"A different view on pink guns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/ClaireWolfe\/2011\/03\/24\/the-trouble-with-advice-pink-guns-thank-you-and-other-stuff\/\">groused about pink guns<\/a> yesterday, Joel &#8212; who disagrees &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/theultimateanswertokings.blogspot.com\/2011\/03\/part-of-normalizing-something-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">has a point<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, his view of guns as (gasp) <i>fashion accessories<\/i> in some less hoplophobic and less legislated future evoked an image of the cheerfully armed denizens of L. Neil Smith&#8217;s North American Confederacy. Now, I can easily see the ladies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0765301539\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=livifree07-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0765301539\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Probability Broach<\/i><\/a> wearing sidearms in pink or purple or paisley or anything else they wanted. Very <i>large<\/i>, very scary-looking girly guns, but nevertheless, girly. (WolfSong <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/ClaireWolfe\/2011\/03\/24\/the-trouble-with-advice-pink-guns-thank-you-and-other-stuff\/comment-page-1\/#comment-7722\" target=\"_blank\">makes a point about the virtue of girly guns, too.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Still, in <i>this<\/i> world I&#8217;m not yet ready to change my mind. It&#8217;s not the pink guns I object to. Or glittery guns. Or guns with Hello Kitty emblems on them. As commentors pointed out, in a sense &#8220;girly guns&#8221; are no different than guy guns with fancy engraving or staghorn grips. And they&#8217;re definitely not as gross as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luxist.com\/2010\/05\/05\/diamond-studded-guns-part-of-mexican-drug-lords-haul\/\" target=\"_blank\">these<\/a>. Or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingofforwards.com\/amazing\/saddams-golden-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\">these<\/a>. Of course, people ought to be able to decorate their guns to their tastes, however good or bad anybody else might judge them.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the marketing to women as if we were all brainless bimbos that bothers me. In that sense, pushing pink guns at us is a definite step up from the days when marketers expected us to believe our friends would sneer at us because our dishwashers left spots on our stemware. Or that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,909414,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">only the right toothpaste could give us sex appeal<\/a>. And a woman without either &#8220;sex appeal&#8221; or a good shirtwaist dress, pearl necklace, and high-heeled shoes to do her vacuuming and cooking in was a woman whose existence had no point.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s a step up from all that.
