Portable facial-recognition and iris-scanning devices. Another gift of USACorp&#8217;s perpetual war machine.\n<li>While junque shopping, I really would have bought that set of five poker-playing dog prints (especially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.card-player-center.com\/poker_dogs\/images\/coolidge_pinched_with_four_aces.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Pinched with Four Aces.&#8221;<\/a>) They were too expensive (and does anybody really <i>need<\/i> five framed poker-playing dog prints?). But I got curious about the history of the famous pix. <a href=\"http:\/\/amillionmilesfromnormal.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/dogs-playing-poker.html\" target=\"_blank\">So here&#8217;s it.<\/a> Started life as cigar ads; somehow that&#8217;s not surprising. The header photo &#8212; not of dogs &#8212; is strange and vaguely NSFW. But a fun read.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/end-of-the-middle-class-2011-7#according-to-moodys-analytics-the-wealthiest-5-of-all-households-in-the-united-states-now-account-for-approximately-37-of-all-consumer-spending-39\" target=\"_blank\">This factoid<\/a> must scare the designer pants off those folks who believe consumer spending is the One True Measure of a healthy economy. (Oops. The link may not take you directly to the intended factoid, even though it should. It&#8217;s factoid 39: According to Moody&#8217;s Analytics, the wealthiest 5 percent of all U.S. households now account for approximately 37 percent of all consumer spending.)\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/eric-falkenstein-why-everyone-else-is-a-hypocrite-2011-7\" target=\"_blank\">Why Everyone (Else) is a Hypocrite.&#8221;<\/a>\n<li>Joel does it again: <a href=\"http:\/\/theindependentspirit.com\/embrace-the-chaos\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Embrace the Chaos.&#8221;<\/a>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Oh yeah. Two new chapters of Jake MacGregor&#8217;s <i>The Advisor<\/i> went up today &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/theadvisornovel.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/chapter-fifteen.html\" target=\"_blank\">15<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/theadvisornovel.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/chapter-sixteen.html\" target=\"_blank\">16<\/a>. Thanks to the speedy kindness of Oliver Del Signore, <i>The Advisor<\/i> also has an additional navigation system so those of us who prefer not to &#8220;do&#8221; JavaScript can scoot from chapter to chapter more easily.
