To S, C^2 and Matt, another.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you noticed that companies you deal with online increasingly <i>force<\/i> you to place symbols, capitals, and numbers in your passwords &#8212; under the illusion that their nannying guarantees a password stronger than any you could possibly invent for yourself? In its own inimitable style <a href=\"http:\/\/imgs.xkcd.com\/comics\/password_strength.png\" target=\"_blank\">XKCD notes the folly of that.<\/a>\n<li>Another bank closes. But <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424053111904480904576498442951766826.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\" target=\"_blank\">not for the usual post-crash reason.<\/a> Nope. Just the usual <i>governmental<\/i> reason.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2011\/08\/11\/spain_google_privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;A right to be forgotten&#8221;?<\/a> There&#8217;s an interesting concept. Could it really interfere with the right to free speech?\n<li>More village self-defense. But this time, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/mexican-villagers-attack-alleged-crooks-killing-6-232018471.html\" target=\"_blank\">is it justice, or &#8230;?<\/a>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And two personal notes. <\/p>\n<p>Because Pat asked: Nope, you didn&#8217;t miss part V of &#8220;Responsibilities of a Resident of the Police State.&#8221; I haven&#8217;t written it yet. Was hoping to get to it last week, but my brain has been overloaded lately. Think pieces are hard, and that one just hasn&#8217;t gelled yet.<\/p>\n<p>I usually don&#8217;t mention such things until <i>afterward<\/i>, since the only way I can get through them is to pretend nobody&#8217;s listening. But I&#8217;m scheduled to be on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianwilson.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Wilson&#8217;s radio show<\/a> tomorrow at 4:30 EDT. Brian is so cool I have no worries about the interview going well.
