Via Wendy McElroy, quoting John Pugsley: 15 non-political strategies for increasing freedom.
While there’s nothing new here for long-time freedomistas, there are some great reminders. And Pugsley puts ’em strongly.

Didi I miss a page two link ?
FYI …
Didi = Oops.
Oops indeed. Sorry ’bout that, gooch. Corrected now — 15, not 20, strategies.
wow….makes me wonder “what if”…….again
Hey, I did pretty good using that as a check list reference….but I still haven’t figured out how to get around sales tax and the daunting drivers license/ID things yet…..
Recent times have made it easier to have conversations with the sheep, altho they still aren’t willing to give up their comforts in exchange for stopping some of the madness….and I have a personality flaw of not wanting to tell other people how to think/live their lives so I’m not that forceful when it comes to those kinds of conversations, nor am I that willing to explain in much detail how I’ve managed to live ok without “following the herd”……
Last few years I’ve been in Nevada, can’t tell you how much that makes me uneasy and embarrassed…..
Naturegirl: How would you feel about exchanging some of the sales taxes you pay for a shipping fee? If you order something (online, by phone, or by mail) from a company that does NOT have a physical presence in your state, then there is no sales tax.
Don’t know how much that helps you, but it’s a thought.
I have looked into that, Ellendra, via the search to find people who make things (avoiding big box stores and China products) – problem with that is my lack of credit card(s) (another avoidance issue I have) but it’s do-able, just takes longer…..I like the fact that alot of online merchants use UPS, and not the regular mail, too…..
If the area I’m in had a more diverse farmers market I could easily pretty much eliminate paying sales tax, altho in some areas they make those merchants charge sales tax too 🙁
And I try to keep an eye on all those out there trying to put restrictions on online and inter-state sales, which would mean that eventually the internet will be “captured” as well…..
Sometimes it turns out that my strange way of buying things isn’t always the cheapest, and sometimes that bothers me (cuz I’m not wealthy by any means); but I try to do my part in the small ways I that can as often as possible….
Claire,
I’ve just finished a book titled “Possum Living” by Dolly Freed. I think you two could be kindred spirits. She wrote in a no nonsense way about how she lived.

Good book. She was 18 when she wrote the book. She mentioned learning to make moonshine by the time she wrote the book. : )
Jim B. — thank you! I know Possum Living! Somebody gifted me a copy years and years ago. Mine is long gone in one of my many moves since then. And for a long time, the book was waaaaay out of print and darned near impossible to get. Looks like somebody has reprinted it now, and you’ve discovered it. Yay!!! I agree it’s well worth reading.
What you may not know is that Dolly repudiated the chapter on Law.
She mentioned it in a footnote at the end of the chapter and again in the new afterword. She also wrote in the afterword what she’d been up to since the book was written. Interesting.
I was following her blog for a while (earlier this year), but don’t seem to have the link anymore….what a life she’s led!!
Naturegirl,
Is this the link you’re looking for?

Hehe, there it is, thanks Jim….wow, I haven’t been there since May *blush* – that’s one of the last ones I remember reading…. http://possumliving.net/blog/ …..and the tomato, mozzarella, and basil salad sounds yummy……
