News from Katherine Albrecht: You already know StartPage, a privacy-enhancing alternative to Google. But what if you just prefer the results Google gives, even as you deplore its snooping? You might want to give StartPage’s sister site StartingPage.com a try. Google results wrapped in Ixquick/StartPage privacy.
Given a “trust mark” by EuroPriSe, the European privacy certification authority, which, according to Katherine, “… only awards its seal of approval after a service passes an in-depth, independent audit by legal and technical experts.”

Thanx. Been using Start Page but in just a few minutes I can tell I like this much better. When using Start Page I can’t tell you how many times I went to Google because the answers weren’t sufficient.
I use Ixquick. It does not track ip addresses.
Someone once told me it was related to StartPage… but I forget the details – if I’m not completely mistaken, of course. Anyway, I like it and have used it for at least two years now. Very thorough results every time.
Thanks, Claire. I’ve wanted away from Google for some time, but like EN said – I also want searches not to be a waste of time. This is my new homepage.
MamaLiberty, you’re right. Ixquick and StartPage are the same search engine. You’re using the made-for-Europe version and StartPage is the U.S. version (though I find its results sometimes show its Euro roots; when I search for something that might be a commercial item, the top results are often from stores in the UK). I like the look and results of the new StartingPage very much. I’ve also been happily using DuckDuckGo, which has a lovely interface, privacy features, and a habit of producing a handy little summary at the top of its results.
Joel — Glad to be of assistance. 🙂 And glad you’re getting to enjoy some warm weather after the punishing early winter.

O … K … Now I understand.
Ixquick is European based searches and StartingPage is US based.
Like ML I have been using IxQuick for a while.
I go now to check out the “local” version.
gooch
gooch — close! Ixquick is European. StartPage is the US version of Ixquick. StartINGPage is also US based — but it’s basically a Google search with privacy features wrapped around it.
Whew !
You do remember that I am a retired rag sailor right ?
Too many facts all at once can leave me staring blankly ….
{/joke}
BUT I think I have it now.
Thanks for the correction.

I’m in the habit of using the SSL version of Scroogle Scraper:
https://ssl.scroogle.org/
I do see a slightly better results layout with Startingpage – and image searches – so I might give it a try. By the way – if you just manually drop an ‘s’ in behind the ‘http’ on the link for Startingpage – it does call up an SSL session. That’d probably be the way I’d bookmark it – fwiw.
Plug Nickel Outfit — Good point, thank you.
I also use https versions when available; I don’t often enough remember to include those versions on links in blog posts. Appreciate the reminder.
I’m delighted to find that my memory has not totally imploded… LOL I’ll go look for the StartPage and see if there is a meaningful difference. 🙂
…. before I forget.
