Did you know that today is National Apricot Day?
I didn’t either. But by all means, take the rest of the day off to celebrate. Only if you live in the U.S., though. All you Europeans and South Africans and whatnot — back to work! (Oh, wait, you’re already done working for the day. Darn.)
Well, next year … everybody gets January 9th off!
And hey, what might we celebrate tomorrow …?

January 10 is National Bittersweet Chocolate Day.
Seems reasonable.
Sounds wonderful! Can’t we combine that with the annual drop a candle and shoot day? Or was that gun porn picture day? My memory is failing me here. Heck, why not all of them?
We could have trees decorated with apricots, and any that happened to be left over on Jan. 10 could get dipped in chocolate to share with friends and family. All of it while sipping coffee and hot chocolate, comparing gun porn pictures.
One or two days isn’t enough. Christmas used to last 40 days… we could figure out how to stretch this out even more, couldn’t we?
Hmmm, what could I use for an apricot tree? The coffee mug tree would work, but it’s not very tall. Have to give that some thought.
if you celebrate National Apricot Day does that make you a ‘regular’ gal/guy?
Yee gads

Since it’s also National Hot Tea Month (who comes up with this stuff, anyhow?) we can do as MamaLiberty says — dip our left over Apricot Tree decorations in chocolate and sip the hot beverage of our choice. (Hot tea goes extremely well with peppermint schnapps, BTW.)
ms jordan — I’m no addict! I’m a connoisseur. Never mind that the very thought of being deprived of my California dried apricots reduces me to crouching in a corner shaking and shuddering. I am NOT an addict. Really …
groan. Jake. That’s prunes.
And surely, surely no one would be depraved enough to name a National Prune Day … would they?
MamaLiberty — you have a great mind. We’ll drop our candles, blast away, pick the candles up, dust ’em off, light ’em and use ’em for atmosphere while we celebrate apricots, chocolate, hot tea with peppermint schnapps … and whatever.
For anybody who didn’t get drop a candle and shoot when Mama mentioned it ..

What! No Peanut Butter Cup Day? We need to get cracking. : )
On another note, there is a trust fund being set up for Sarah McKinley, the young widow teen mother with a baby, who was force to shoot an intruder.

No peanut butter cup day, Jim B. Sorry. But if you search for the word “peanut” at this link you might get pretty close …

Thanks for the link to the fund.
How about Thomas Jefferson’s birthday. April 13. If any politician’s birthday should be celebrated, it’s his. Especially given the timing.
AHEM!
“Due to their high fiber to volume ratio, dried apricots are sometimes used to relieve constipation or induce diarrhea. ”

me knowst fiber 🙂
Well now. That’s embarrassing. How am I going to put in subtle requests for California dried apricots at Christmas if it’s going to make people think about … bowels?
I once had an unfortunate experience after eating a bunch of dried apricots while I drove. Well, it was more painful than unfortunate, I suppose. But I did learn a valuable lesson about eating dried fruits in excess.
Oh, and I sun-dried a bunch of apricots last year (this town has a lot of apricot trees). There’s probably not even too much dust on them from sitting outside while they dried, since I was able to rescue them every time a dirt storm hit. (Apricot skin is gritty, right?)
I’m reasonably sure I learned the same lesson Kent did, though I wasn’t driving..hot weather, dried fruits and raisins, with a lotta liquid is a bad idea. A learning experience, but a bad idea.
Kent — Mmmmmm on the sun-dried local apricots. First time in a long time I’ve heard of anybody doing that.
I grew up in Silicon Valley before it was Silicon Valley. At that time, it was a major ag area with apricots being one of its many products. Kids just a few years older than I earned their summer money “cutting cots” — slicing apricots to lay out in the sun on big flats. By the time I was old enough for knife work, cutting cots was no more.
Probably just as well. I’m sure I’d have hated the things if I’d had to work hour after hour in the hot sun, seeing the bugs, bruises, and dirt on those ‘cots.
Gads… one problem with all the things there are “days” for… if we tried to incorporate very many of them we’d all weigh 500 pounds soon. Oh dear… have not had Peach Melba in ever so long!!
We’d best be very selective. And, in true freedom fashion, we’ll all select our own. But my goodness, wouldn’t that be some party? 🙂
And –
That’s just so not right to have a month of “celebrate food goodies” right after the holidays….not to mention derailing all the NYE lose weight wishes…….
