Here’s the movie based on John Silveira’s famous (or at least semi-famous) Backwoods Home classified. After making a big splash at Sundance, it’s headed for theaters this summer. Yayyyyyy, John!

I hope this brings him a boat full of precious metals!
I’d like to think that, too. 🙂 But if I recall correctly, he sold them the right to use the ad for a relatively modest flat fee. So he’ll just have to settle for fame and glory.
Oh. And also a cameo appearance in the film.
This is one of the examples I always use when trying to explain how ones’ intentions can be hijacked by fate and become it’s own phenomenon, LOL….
Did that novel ever get finished/published?
Will he admit to placing the “psychic wanted” ad? I’ve been tempted to apply for that just to say I did, lol.
naturegirl — Exactly. John probably would never even have revealed that the ad was his, except that so many others were claiming authorship or just using it without credit. When he did admit it, turned out the filmmakers were already looking for him. That’s one cool coincidence.
Novel. You mean John’s novel? I understand he’s got several in the works, but the one he had hoped to publish this year is back in rewrites, unfortunately.
Did I miss that one? Psychic wanted?
A bunch of us at YTMND.com are really looking forward to the movie.
Claire, if I remember the story correctly those were the beginning sentences of a novel he was writing (or had written or wanted to write or something LOL) and he grabbed it to put in the ad because it was already written/ready to go….I’ll have to go back and find it and see if I have it wrong, old age *sigh*……
Anyway, I always thought it ironic it became famous before it had been used in it’s original intention…..
Oooohhhh, yeah. Good memory, naturegirl. That book. I don’t think he ever wrote it, though he could have it in manuscript somewhere.
Great. I will actually go to the theater for that one.
That looks like a great movie. I may ask Ian to rip it off.
I hope the movie lives up to the expectations but I refuse to get all worked up about it. The last time I was hyped was for a movie from one of my favorite TV shows, Firefly which turned out to be a major letdown. As Spider Robinson wrote “Time travelers, strictly cash.”
Psychic wanted: you know where to apply. (was on the joke page of a past BHM issue) I still get a kick out of it!
I think it was a few issues ago, but there was an ad in the classified section, the same wording as what dsc posted. I immediately thought of John.
