You probably know that, after 12 years of planning and two conferences that ended in chaos, the United Nations finally managed to pass an anti-gun treaty on Tuesday.
BHM asked me a couple of months ago to track this monstrosity and write an article about the treaty and its implications. Here it is as a website exclusive.
Bottom line for those who’ve been worried about it: As always, be fierce, be prepared, but don’t panic.

I always try to be “prepard”. (That means being equipped with a “Pard” at the ready, right?) 😉
Oh, you found and changed it too quickly for me! LOL
Thanks, Kent. Yes, after my second cup of tea, I noticed that on my own. But I appreciate anyone who catches my follies and doesn’t laugh too hard at them.
Being equipped with a Pard could be a good idea, too, though. 😉
Good job analyzing the Tyrant Protection Treaty. I tend not to care too much anymore what silly or evil “laws” the thugs pass, but I guess it’s always a good idea to know which direction they are coming at you from.
I believe the biggest impact will be noticed on ammunition.
Gone are the days of cheap (if any) surplus ammo.
It may even stop new ammo sales from such places as Russia.
Probably so. Somewhat countering this will be increased interest in reloading.
A good article Claire, except that it’s “affect”, not “effect”. 🙂
In my view we already have (somewhat leaky) registration, with NICS and the 4473’s. What, you think they don’t store that gun information that is passed to them? Har har. Yeah, the government already knows who all the gun nuts are, even if they don’t quite know all the guns they have.
I also don’t think it matters quite as much as most people do. Registration leads not to confiscation, but to an attempted confiscation. Whether it succeeds depends on us. Either we shoot the confiscators, or hand the guns over. If we do the latter, we didn’t deserve to have them in the first place, and as Sam Adams said, “… may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

Paul — Thanks for the word-usage catch! I’ve emailed your correction and a couple of others to Oliver. Sigh … no matter how many times I think I’ve proofread, there’s always something …
I don’t know about the UN, but in some jurisdictions here in the good ol’ USA they already are taking guns away.

This is a story I have been following on a local gun blog for some time. As I was a lifelong resident of the county in question until moving to PA in 2003 I can sympathize with the individual in the story.
If you allow gun registration, be prepared for this to happen to you!
I sincerely doubt that, Geoff. After a few thefts in an area, the People will get wise. The criminal gang might go on their next looting mission, only to find that they have been surrounded by the local “Welcome Committee”.
If you haven’t done so already, develop a network of friends and neighbors into a mutual defense association. Such groups are quietly forming all over the country.
I can tell you this….
A few years back some of my more stalwart friends held a private ‘combat shoot’……it was a scenario involving a couple of wrecked cars, a ‘roadblock’ and a large plywood target at about 200 yards simulating a ‘ busload’ of….well…people wearing, of all things, items on their heads that certainly resembled blue helmets.
Blue makes a fantastic target against almost any backdrop.
The irony of the whole treaty is that the countries that sign it have no intention of not selling arms to any country or group they fancy. Hypocrites. It will only be honored in the breach. All a criminal or insurgent grop wll need is an official, sponsor, just like now.
Time to work on that tinkering project again . . .
Rather than worry about no more cheap “surplus” from WWII, we need to get busy producing our own ammo. The technology is readily available… and new stuff comes along frequently.
I’ve got guns… but I’d love to have a 3D printer that would spit out cartridges for any and all of them. 🙂
Matt’s right. This treaty is more about keeping the ruling thugs of every country in power, than it is about stopping arms to bad guys. In fact like many pieces of legislation its real purpose is the opposite of its advertised purpose!
Tom’s right too. Form those associations, folks.
BTW I doubt we will see many blue helmets. They will have the foreigners wear US military gear. However I doubt there will be many foreigners involved as they will be needed in their own countries. When our economy goes down, so will every other one.
“Can the U.N. ban America’s guns?”
Nope.
“Can Congress use the U.N. as an excuse to ban America’s guns?”
Uh-oh.
Geoff, thanks for the link. I’ve sent it on. Saying it’s disturbing is an understatement.
N.B.: I needed to use http://www.610wtvn.com/articles/national-news-104668/new-york-dads-pistol-license-suspended-11152916/ to get to it.
Gun grabbing police, little boys suspended from school for pointing fingers, legislators running amok passing unconstitutional laws, are only the latest examples of hysteria. From the founding of this country and the Salem witch trials we’ve been subject to this kind of over the top reaction. The same people who can see how ridiculous this is, because they are gun owners, were most likely silent or at best tsk tskd at the time of the Wenatchee child abuse trials. That infamous case culminated the day care center/child molestation hysteria of the 1990s. About 60 people received almost 30,000 charges in Wenatchee, and all of those people had the charges dropped or were later exonerated. But not until a number were jailed and lost parental rights with children placed in foster care. While it ran its course that mass insanity had people accused of Satanic rituals and worse all over the country. So this is nothing new in our 400 year experiment in Puritan ethics.
Might add that it doesn’t matter if you are left, right, or in between. Liberals want to make demons out of ordinary gun owners and people who have chubby kids and eat ice cream and drink soda pop. Conservatives have not only banned drug use but actually jail the addicts. Both sides do it to “protect the children.” Neither of them will be happy until we are all protected from ourselves and living in a padded cell. And WE are the crazy ones?
Puritan ethics = oxymoron. Puritans believe in rules. People who believe in rules don’t practice ethics.
“Ethical behavior is doing the right thing when no one is looking, even when doing the wrong thing is legal.”
