Interesting times for gun contollers — UPDATED

Well, well, well. Getting interesting for the hoplophobes today.

The turncoat Gottlieb has turned coat in another direction. He’s withdrawn his support for Manchin-Toomey because, you know, those bad, bad politicians weren’t faaaaaaaiiiiir to him. They uuuuuuuuused him.

Yeah. Like somebody who’s been in the lobbying biz for decades would be so very shocked at that.

With Manchin-Toomey going down the tubes, the R-party has felt the need to rush in with a last-minute substitute proposal (pdf) from Chuck Grassley, Ted Cruz, et al.

It’s slightly longer than the M-T botch and I haven’t read it with a magnifying glass. But despite the verbage about universal registration background checks in the bill title (which I believe is just an artifact referring to the original bill, which this proposes to amend), quick searches using the terms “background,” “NICS,” and “transfer” show no ban on private sales.

Don’t quote me on that; wait ’til the Second Amendment lawyers weigh in. I’m an amateur at bill reading and one of my life’s goals is to remain one. Do love political theatrics, though.

This is turning into quite the drama. Not to mention putting the word “cloture” back in our vocabularies for the first time since high school civics class.

UPDATE: It looks as if everything — everything! — the gun banners want is getting voted down. That link is to an open thread with updates and who voted for what.

Even the R’s last-minute substitute bill collapsed. In several cases, Dems (particularly from the don’t-touch-my-guns states like Montana and Alaska) voted against gun control in significant numbers.

Reid will almost certainly pull the whole freakin’ mess.

This doesn’t mean universal gun-buyer registration is dead. No telling what tricks these tricksy folks have up their sleeves for later. But they sure did get flummoxed for now.

Get ready folks. A new bill coming down restricting the sale of pressure cookers. You will be forced to have a background check, and it will now be illegal to own one that holds more than two quarts. And henceforth, the sale of “Tactical Black Bags” will also require a background check and can’t be larger than 1000 cu in.

ENtP, Darn glad I have TWO pressure cookers inherited from Mom and MIL. One for me and one for the black market. Woot!

Be careful Karen, high capacity pressure cookers are still illegal. You might think of burying one and for the love of God do not let your progressive neighbors know you own one.

One wonders if members of Gottlieb’s own SAF/CCRKBA kicked his ass and that’s why he backed down. Strictly speculating here.

No honest women needs a pressure cooker larger than 2 quarts.

I get the idea when the anti-gun folks demanded a “dialogue” they didn’t expect it to be two-sided.

This isn’t 1994 any more. Back then it was just four government-regulated TV networks and a few big-city newspapers. Now we got this internet thingy.

    The times they are a’changin’.

I’m not sure what will be more annoying: the sky-is-falling whining from the tyranny now! crowd (send money!), or the chest-thumping from the promoters of what will now almost certainly be universally retconned as a brilliant chess play (send money!).

I admit, I’ve got little stomach left for anyone who would ask me to be “happy” that my rapist failed to penetrate.

    “Do love political theatrics, though.”

I like to equate statist partisan bickering with monkeys flinging feces at each other. Useless, but entertaining.

The margin of defeat of the gun control bill was way too small for anyone’s comfort. Too small, to make it more likely the next one will pass.

As for Gotlieb, I think someone kicked his ass about his turncoat or that he’d somehow became aware of the reactions to what he did and decided to save his ass. Especially now that the Bill been defeated.

Dunno that Gottlieb backed off because of getting his ass kicked (yet). Since he got an ass kicking after trying to impose registration on Washington state earlier this year (and only lost because some Dems in the Dem-dominated state legislature said no), you’d think if he was going to learn he would have learned then.

As to Gottlieb being smart: I have no doubt he’s very intelligent. I also don’t think he’d recognize a principle or a right if it bit him on the backside.

I had some long-ago dealings with him (which he probably wouldn’t remember, but I do, vividly) and my overwhelming impression was of an utter, absolute, bedrock lack of ethics, as well as a wishy-washy support for gun rights — both of which have been verified this week.

I do hope he eventually learns that selling out rights in a vain attempt to win privileges … doesn’t pay. That’s the only way he’ll ever actually get it, IMHO.

    It’s a skirmish.
In the propaganda side of it, the amount of blather and pure BS is escalating.

Rediculous claims are being made by the anti-gunners and CiC, who it would appear has swallowed a bitter laxative simply because our “system” of government – when allowed to act as designed – denied him what he wanted.

On to the next chaotic “crisis” and if there isn’t one – well, hyperbole and “investigative journalism” can create one.

I think the world is safe from my pressure cooker. It’s actually a canner and holds about three or four gallons. I can hardly lift it empty. 🙂

And indeed… we should not get too giddy over this vote… they do tend to try the same things over and over and over. They have plenty of time, our money, and all the power we give them.

Seems it’s long past time we quit giving them the ammo to shoot us with, eh?

I totally agree with MamaLiberty. While I am celebrating a little today at the defeat, I remember all too well about 4 years ago when Senator Scott Brown was elected in MA and it *appeared* to be the nail in the coffin of Obamacare, but I was dead wrong and through some legislative sorcery that piece of crap was brought back and slammed through another way.

I suspect this will be no different. The Dictator in Chief is DEDICATED to getting this done so if it doesn’t happen now, don’t worry you can bet they are behind closed doors right now planning how to slam it through in the dead of night, or as a rider on another bill, or some other trick. I don’t trust them at all and I am not taking my eyes off of this ball.

For now, let’s celebrate the victory of winning THIS battle, but know the war is still well underway.

My Liberty Gear, promoting freedom with t-shirt designs. On kickstarter now at http://kck.st/110A1bC. “There are no other rights if you cannot defend them!” There are plenty of great places that promote freedom, but times like these demand more!

I’d be willing to bet that fear was a factor, and not just fear of losing an election. There is the huge rush going on to buy AR-15s and ammo, and there was an awful lot of hot talk on the internet, people getting ready for civil war. I bet at least in the back of some politicians’ minds was a picture of them hanging from a flagpole. Tends to focus the mind… 🙂

I “lead off” today on my daily news show (HebrewNationRadio is the website, for those interested) with the “good news – bad news” thing. No it’s certainly not over; does ANYBODY think Evil will stop at this point?

The Good News is the humor – from the Big Lies like Obama dissing people who know that “infringed” means to CBS opining the failure of “meaningful” Rape of the Bill of Rights. The Bad News is that the latest infringment “failed” by falling short of 60 votes.

That means over half the Senate is composed of people guilty of treason.
