You know how I usually view petitioning Our Glorious Leaders. It’s right up there with v*ting for usefulness. However, here’s a petition that deserves some attention:
we petition the obama administration to: require that Syrian rebels receiving firearms and other munitions from the US Government receive only firearms legal for US Civilian ownership, and undergo the same background and security checks a US Civilian would, including appropriate NFA tax stamps, and waiting periods.
I don’t know why anyone would want to arm those barbarians (and they’re barbarians on both sides of that conflict). I really don’t know why anyone who favors the U.N. Small Arms Treaty (I’m talking about you, Mr. O) would rush out to arm any rebels anywhere, since under the treaty exporting arms to a country whose government doesn’t okay importing them would be a huge no-no. Practicing up for being even more of a war criminal than you already are, Mr. O?
But if yet another neocon administration is absolutely determined to send weaponry to savages so they can do horrible things to each other in a cause in which we have no legitimate interest, dragging us into yet another sectarian war conducted by religious fanatics who will then hate the U.S. more than they already do … well, at least do it without the double standard.
Can’t see a reason on earth why third-world Al Quaeda-aligned berserkers should have an easier time getting U.S.-made guns than you or I would.
Great idea, Claire!
Add to that the fact that it’s shaping up to be another US/Russia proxy war, because that’s always worked out so well in the past…
“another U.S./Russia proxy war” that is likely to drag the U.S. into a conflict with Iran!
Excellent post, Claire. The hypocrisy of this is enough to make me choke. Arm the barbarians but go to great lengths to disarm law abiding American citizens? WTF? This is another shining example of how out of touch pols like O are and that there is reason to suspect they are doing the bidding of some shadow masters.
I don’t think they will get U.S. made arms. Likely the U.S. will by AKs from Russia, Poland, Bulgari or China to give to the rebels.
Arming the syrian rebels reinfoces the fact that our second amendment was put in place so that “civilians” would have the arms required to overthrow an abusive and tyrannical government.
Off topic:
Claire,
Did you see this?

This scenario is a little scary for those of us who have to travel on business.
the sarcasm and irony will be lost on anyone you care to influence
Sadly, I think they know exactly what they’re doing. Their two problems are (1) Obama dithers because he’s so indecisive; by doing so they have gotten into this later than they should have to do it as efficiently as possible and (2) the Russians are in the way; they won’t move easily at all.
This isn’t totally a surprise move. I was very struck by this Wesley Clark video, sent to me by a friend some time ago, where he describes a plan to take down seven countries in five years. Syria of course is on the list. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RC1Mepk_Sw
RB: Wow. That is scary. Flying used to be so enjoyable, too.

As a general principle (although in some particular applications, it may be hard to see it playing out well), I think the more arms there are in society, the better. When arms are scarce, who has them? Police and criminals. So any additional arms will tend to end up in the hands of more decent people. It would be better to fly over the place with cargo planes and push out cases of ammo and rifles indiscriminately. Call it the Bonneau Doctrine. 🙂

Berating politicians for not acting consistently is a waste of time, of course. Such treaties are for hobbling non-state groups, not governments, and they certainly are not intended to apply to the Empire.

Makes perfect sense, from a ruler’s point of view.
The most laughable part is that Putin is selling to the rebels already. Many of the photos show new out of the box AK’s, RPGs and Sam 7 and 16 missiles. This kit is brand new and marked with Cyrillic production stamps. Of course you could believe that an ex KGB officer of his rank is naive enough not to be able know what is going where. But when you consider that he will do almost anything to hang on to his only mediterranean naval base you realise that he would supply both sides in a heartbeat. The whole matter is a win win situation for him providing he can stall Iran and prevent western intervention.
Many wonder at the israelis no nonsense attitude but let’s face it they’ve been living next to these lunatics for years.
Who, exactly are the lunatics? I have trouble telling sometimes.
