Christmas shopping, III: maple-bacon stuff (just for giggles)

Okay, here’s a bonus set of Amazon holiday links, just because I find this weirdly funny.

Since going (um … mostly) primal, I’ve developed a jones for maple-cured bacon. This being a pricey item at the local grocer, I checked to see what Amazon had.

I laughed to discover how many maple-bacon products there are. Very few of them involving any actual bacon.

Then during my seashore excursion last week, I delved into bins of salt-water taffy (you see what I mean about “mostly” primal). Amidst the traditional flavors, there it was: maple-bacon taffy. Curious, but with an inward eeeeeew, I added a couple pieces to my basket.

Oh. Man. It was good.

So in the maple-bacon spirit of the holidays, and in the cause of stocking stuffing, I present:

1. Man Bait maple-bacon flavored lollipops

2. Wild Bill’s Sweet Maple-Glazed Bacon Jerky

3. Maple-bacon dog treats (no wheat)

4. Maple-bacon flavored coffee (I still say eeeew on that one, but then, who knows?) (And here’s some a tad less expensive)

5. The “erotic” and dare I say tongue-in-cheek cookbook Fifty Shades of Bacon (which of course includes maple in there somewhere)

6. “With Visions of Maple Cured Bacon Dancing in Their Heads” holiday cards

7. You can even get bacon scented room-freshener spray, but since it’s mere bacon and not maple-bacon, I’m not going to include it in this list.

8. And oh yes, as an afterthought — you can even get four pounds of actual maple bacon!

Who knew? Whoever could have guessed all the possibilities? Some lucky recipients are going to get flavorful laughs when they open their presents this year.

We had maple bacon ice cream recently. It was incredible.

You can make your own maple bacon. Bake any kind of bacon in oven until it is about 5 minutes from being done, then drizzle real maple syrup over it, finish cooking for about 5 minutes. You don’t need too much syrup as most bacon already contains a bit of sugar.

We like Grade B Maple syrup. Amazon has it. We use Hidden Springs, but there are other brands. Fake maple syrup is totally worthless, imo. The real thing tastes so much better. We just use it sparingly. I put it in my chai tea every so often. Yum.

Traveled across a big part of Canada with friends one spring, about 30 years ago. I thought I’d be able to enjoy all the maple syrup and salmon I wanted. The prices were insane, even then, so we didn’t, but I do remember one breakfast just outside of Winnipeg where we had maple cured Canadian bacon and all the trimmings. Oh, was that ever good. 🙂 Never did get any salmon. $7.00 US a pound was a bit too rich for my blood. Maybe if we’d gone all the way to British Columbia, but we didn’t.
