If you haven’t visited Earthineer in a while, you might want to take a new look.
Dan Adams has recently added the long-awaited marketplace and barter sections where members can trade with each other. Though they’re still new and smallish, he’s got something quite promising there both for “rural engineers” and for foodies. Earthineer is a labor of love for Dan and it shows in the quality of the presentation.
Among other things, he’s planning to build privacy into the trades, so only the parties involved will have long-term records of their transactions.
Also, Dave Duffy has assigned me an article on Earthineer and I’d love to hear some opinions and questions other than my own.

I like Earthineer’s Marketplace a lot, and see a couple of items I could trade for.
But in trying to log in/join up, Earthineer asks for the full name, email address and password. Is that MY full name or a user name? And do they want the password for my email address, or establish a password just for them? (I don’t wish to give them my eddress password, and I prefer to give a user name.)
Pat, “full name” is the full user name you want to use onEarthineer. “Password” is the password you want to use to log into Earthineer; not your email account password.
Basically, any time you are creating a new account at some website and they ask you to submit a name and password, they are asking for for the name and password you want to use on that site.
No one should ever ask you to provide your email account password (not counting when you are logging into that email account). Certainly no third party should ever expect it. Heck, your email provider shouldn’t ever need it (except when logging in) because the admins can already get to your account and change the password themselves.
(And those Nigerians? They really don’t have $25 million to share with you.)
Thanks, Bear.
I have had a website who wanted me to use my email address/password to open a dialogue with them, and I left them in the dust. But I don’t assume anything that isn’t clear to me, so I ask first.
And I don’t deal with Nigerians, I keep my money in the good old (corrupt) USA…
Sigh. Apparently, yet another website that is completely non-functional without JavaScript.
