Sunday check-in

Too hot to accomplish anything right now. Gads, it’s so nice to be able to say “too hot” when talking about the coastal NorthWET.

One thing I did accomplish this weekend: I got my entries ready for the county fair. Tomorrow is submission day for all the artsy-craftsy stuff.

Feels kinda silly to be doing this. I wouldn’t have entered anything in a fair when I was 10. Or 14. So why am I doing it now that I’m (mumble mumble)?

Because when I was 10 or 14, I’d have approached the whole project with one big whine: “I nnnevvvvver winnnnnn annnnything.”

It was true. If there were three ribbons being given out, I’d place fourth. If five scholarships were in the offing, I’d be sixth. I hated that! Alas, it never occurred to me that I could just work smarter or try harder or practice more. I thought it was all about some mysteriously innate “talent” (or lack thereof) and I was dooooooomed forever to mere above-averageness.

Mere above-averageness is all I ever have achieved, thanks to being a fool. But given the small talent pool hereabouts I’m ruthlessly confident I’ll crush the competition.

Partly because I’m likely to be the only competition in some categories. 🙂

So off I go tomorrow with five drawings, a necklace, and the Foundling Table (now dubbed “Doorway to the Sun,” courtesy of Commentariat member Pat).

I’ll keep you posted.

Heard some ominous news last week. I can’t yet talk about it; maybe by the end of this month. It’s not just ominous for me. It’ll clobber my income if the rumored Bad Thing comes to pass. But the effect on me is the least of it. It’s mad, bad, sad, and completely blindsiding.

Wish I could tell you more. I will. Just not right now. I’d like to get you all roused up about this thing so you could shake fists and write indignant letters and maybe keep it from coming to pass. Instead, I just have to bleed on you without even telling you what the wound is. Sorry.

Will change subject now.

This is funny. If you follow such news you’ll remember that last week the publicists for the BBC series Downton Abbey released a very dignified, very rich, very 1920s-ish photograph of two of the main characters — apparently without noticing somebody’d left a very modern, undignified plastic water bottle on the mantel behind them. The incident became known as “Waterbottlegate.”

The cast of the show responds charmingly. I only wish they’d done it in full costume.

Now the same people who got excited about the erroneous water bottle in the first place are speculating that it might have just been a stunt — a lead in to the follow-up.

People have altogether too much time on their hands.

The other thing I’ve been doing today is Organizing. Yes, the capital-O kind. I could tell you exactly how much I love this activity, but the words might get me fired from BHM.

I’ve acquired Stuff (also with capital letter). I’m not a big stuff person. I never end up with too many clothes or closets full or unworn shoes or extra cars or shelves sagging under thousands of unbearably cute tchotchkes. What I have is tools and materials. Saws and hammers, kaleidoscope mirrors, bargain doors I’ll install two years from now, art supplies, a spare window, beading supplies, drawers full of glues and epoxies, packing peanuts and bubble wrap, ammo and gun-cleaning kits. Useful stuff.

I can get pretty ruthless about throwing junk away, but there’s nothing here to get rid of. This is all useful. Alas, there’s no good, useful place to stash it.

I’m feeling the need to acquire more stuff — shelving and storage containers — to get ahead of the stuff I already have. This seems wrong. Just wrong.

That table should win something ― yeah! (Especially if you show them the table-as-it-was-when-you-bought-it.) Good Luck ― or rather, Good Creating ― on all your entries.

BTW, how is Robbie doing now?

Pat — Yes, great minds. 🙂 I attached before and after photos and a description of the project to the table and used your title, “Doorway to the Sun,” as the header on the document.

And thanks for asking; Robbie’s a lot better, thank heaven. Still not completely normal, but after one brief period of agitation/attention seeking late every night he settles down in the bathroom and is just fine.

Ohhh, the suspense. On being merely above average, that probably puts you in the top half or top third of,the.population, not to shabby.

“Partly because I’m likely to be the only competition in some categories. :-)”

Chuckle about it now, it’s still the oddest feeling when it happens LOL. It’s too easy to fall into the “why did THAT get 1st more than THIS?” over thinking mind-creep…..Just enjoy it, instead LOL….Good luck, and if anything it’ll be an interesting experience 🙂

Yeah, none of that stuff sounds like you should part with it…sounds like you need a workshop area more than just more storage containers….

Of course, absolutely great news always is followed by not so great news…life never leaves it just one way or the other…..

naturegirl — I remember you competing with yourself in fair entries. Guess I’ll soon find out how weird it feels.

I need a workshop and storage. I need storage brilliantly, conveniently arranged in a workshop! Except I need two workshops with brilliant storage — one of the kind you can fill with sawdust and another of the kind that’s hygenically dust- (and pet hair!) free. Who knows? Maybe I’ll actually find them both under all this badly stored stuff.

Being above-average crafty puts you ahead of the 90% that aren’t crafty at all.

Stuff… Oh yeah, I’ve got stuff. And not any really good place to organize it.

I moved (or was moved) 40 times in my 68 years, so far. Most of that was in the first 40 years of my life. We did not have any opportunity to accumulate much.

So, when I bought this place, and figured my moving days were done, I gradually collected useful things. Trying to keep them neat and organized seems a hopless task, but I try. And I often look at things I don’t really use, and can’t see myself using in the near future, and think about who might like to have and actually use them. When possible, I offer to give the things to those folks. And, often, they are very happy to have it.

Somehow, that hasn’t really reduced the overall volume of stuff a great deal. My best friend loves garage and estate sales, and she brings ME gifts from time to time. 🙂 So far, so good. She just found a replacement for my favorite coffee maker that recently died. I’ll take it.

LarryA — I’m not sure that’s a good thing. But thank you for the “glass 90% full” cheer.

Karen — That’s a hoot! I never got around to being a George Carlin fan while he was alive so I’m catching up now. “Their stuff is sh*t and your sh*t is stuff.” Um … yeah.

I call this the farmer’s mentality. If you’ve ever been to a real working small farm, the entire yard is covered with half-dismantled farm equipment that “might be useful”. Great place for kids to play, though.

I admire the tiny house movement, but if I ever had one it would be standing next to a metal pole building 20 times as large for my stuff and projects. However I have to admit I am not real happy with pole buildings for my stuff because the mice and squirrels get into everything. It’s depressing opening a box to look at some old treasure you’ve collected and seeing a mouse turd on top of it.

As to being average or above average, trust me Claire, you are not average. 🙂

I know what you mean about moving. I have a lot of moves under my belt too. Sometimes I get the itch to move but my wife seems to be getting stuck in this place. We have been here 11 years already.

The best thing about moving every few years is that it gives you the opportunity to sort through and toss half of your stuff.

I move around alot, as well. My downfall isn’t the actual moving part but the lifestyle changes – like going from an apartment into a house and then a more appropriate house etc etc etc….that’s when the stuff becomes uncontrollable LOL….and it really sucks when it starts going the downsizing way…..

Not even gonna get into what happens when all the inherited stuff starts coming….that was another painful sorting process of MORE STUFF than one could imagine…..thankfully the hoarding gene stopped with me……

George Carlin was the 1st thing I thought of. Not surprised Karen beat me to it — well, I was busier than usual yesterday, and didn’t run through the blogs as usual. So, what was I doing? Well, I spent most of the morning acquiring more stuff! I have accomplished it in the past, but it’s tough to go to a hamfest and come away empty handed. And how could I pass up a TNC (terminal node controller) for $2? You don’t run across deals like that every day! No sir!

In addition to having my small apartment pretty well crammed full, I have stuff stored in 2 locations. Fortunately, both are free. In the process of moving a couple times, I’ve cut down a lot on my stuff, but I’m down to stuff I’d rather not part with. A lot of what’s in that category is tools. Still hope to have a place to set up and use them some time.

Can’t wait to hear that ominous news. I hope for your sake, and that of others in the same boat, that it doesn’t come to pass.
