In praise of an uncompromising b*astard

Though I officially quit JPFO on Thursday, I promised one last article. (A freebie; no more JPFO paychecks for me.)

It went online today: Aaron Zelman: In praise of an uncompromising bastard.

‘Scuse the French.

There will never be another like him and the gun-rights movement is poorer for it.

Since X “keeps raising its head every few years”, may inquiring minds be given a link to the article (on the off chance that this inquiring mind is currently pro-X)?

The FairTax: A Trojan Horse for America?

This is one that just grew and grew as we both thought of new things to add. The reason I didn’t mention the particular issue or give a link to the article in today’s article is that is that it could have been any issue; I just wanted to show how Aaron’s mind worked. I didn’t want readers to go off on a pro-con about the so-called FairTax.

It looks like Gottlieb is acting as though the deal is done- just waiting for the final announcement. I’m hoping he’s wrong.
I also hope you can find another source of income to replace the JPFO checks.

Great article, Claire, as always. Aaron would be very proud to be remembered that way.

I think we’re all anxious to hear what finally happens with this deal. Win or lose, we need to be moving on to what needs to be done next.

Claire: Semi-related – Did you see that Gottlieb has basically called you a liar, conveniently without saying just what you got wrong?

“It is very unfortunate that Claire Wolf has made a number of false and wrong claims about both JPFO and SAF and how JPFO will function after the merger.

My reply to him is still in moderation. In fact, every comment I’ve made on that column is still in moderation a full day later. I’ve had to settle for posting responses on in updates to the SAF/JPFO post on my website. Unfortunately, no one sees them there… either.

Thanks, Bear. Yeah, it’s interesting Gottlieb said that — especially since the real false claims have been coming from the JPFO board and I’ve refuted a couple of them on gunssavelife.com

FWIW, I couldn’t have made any false claims about how JPFO will operate under Gottlieb, since I’ve said all along that everything is being handled so secretively that no one is being allowed to know what’s going to happen. I’ve certainly conjectured, based on knowledge and experience, what will happen. But I’m not in a position to make factual claims about JPFO’s fate.

Too bad about the seemingly perpetual moderation. But I don’t think David or Examiner.com would censor you. I know I’ve sometimes missed seeing pending comments even here.

The moderation issue is with Examiner, not David. The system catches anything that looks like a URL and holds it for a human. Sadly, Examiner doesn’t appear to employ literate humans anymore, so the comments will probably remain in moderation until the heat death of the universe. It’s a known Examiner problem going back for years.

Never had any particular respect for Gottlieb from the first time I heard the name, but for him to call Claire a liar… that’s really over the top. I sincerely hope he gets nothing but hearburn over this deal. He’s already more than earned it.

Who would sing this song: Aaron (“old” JPFO) or SAF (“new” JPFO)? I think I know who wouldn’t. I like the song.

Note: It was written (in Yiddish) by a Jewish ghetto fighter, Hirsch Glick, about 1942.

Never say that there is only death for you
Though leaden clouds may be concealing skies of blue
    Because the hour that we have hungered for is near;
Beneath our tread the earth shall tremble: We are here!

From land of palm tree to the far-off land of snow
We shall be coming with our torment and our woe,
And everywhere our blood has sunk into the earth
Shall our bravery, our vigor blossom forth!

We’ll have the morning sun to set our day aglow,
And all our yesterdays shall vanish with the foe,
And if the time is long before the sun appears,
Then let this song go like a signal through the years.

    This song was written with our blood and not with lead;
It’s not a song that birds sing overhead.
It was a people, among toppling barricades,
That sang this song of ours with pistols and grenades.

Never say you are walking your final road,
Though leaden skies conceal the days of blue.
But a people stood among collapsing walls,
And sang this song with pistols in their hands

Well that was interesting. I have now gone from Somewhat-Pro-X to Strongly-Anti-X. Thank you for teaching me something new today.

If the JPFO board is for the merger, how did you get an anti piece on their website?

  12. Claire
    Claire August 26, 2014 5:56 pm

Steve — Which anti piece do you mean?

  13. Laird
    Laird August 26, 2014 9:23 pm

Great anti-X article; that’s the first time I’ve seen it. It’s the same argument I’ve been making for years with my libertarian friends who are “pro-x”. All you have to do is read the *?*&* bill to realize what a steaming pile of manure it is. But still they drink the koolaid.

  14. Steve
    Steve August 27, 2014 8:19 am

Claire – Your article opposed making concessions, which the board is trying to do with the merger.

Steve — Oh, yeah. I see what you mean. Also, Nicki’s article on Monday took a similar position to mine.

OTOH, we’re just taking the positions JPFO has always taken. If JPFO management objects, they’re free to drop our articles into the memory hole — as I suspect will be the case under SAF management. We were hired to write real JPFO stuff, and that’s what everybody will do*, until somebody stops them.

BTW, I’m not against making concessions. Concessions are sometimes necessary. I’m against (as Aaron was eternally against) selling out basic rights in exchange for any mere privileges, no matter how “good” the privileges may look to some.

*Not me; I resigned as a contractor.

Oh, and Steve — JPFO’s board isn’t directly involved with posting of alerts and articles.

Could be they’ll decide to be involved with UNposting them, but generally the writers and webmaster operate autonomously.
