I’m having one of those “brilliant” blogthoughts that just hasn’t gelled yet, thus the “lite” posting.
Today I’m spring cleaning and making beef jerky. The house is filled with a wonderful honey-teriyaki-beef-pepper aroma. Haven’t made jerky since moving into this place because this house doesn’t have an oven and I didn’t think the dehydrators I have for fruits & veggies were quite powerful enough to handle drying meat. But I tossed a folded flour-sack dishtowel over the vents to keep more heat in and they’re doing just dandy. Can’t wait to sample the product.
Speaking of sampling the product, a word of advice to anyone who might ever be in this circumstance: do not drink a bloody Mary while knitting a dragon.
That’s all for now.
Well, I’m not knitting anything. So I’m going to have a Warsteiner. And probably some Buffalo Trace later.
Funny I never thought of you as a bloody merry kind of person. As for me, I shall presently finish dinner then, since I have no things to do that require being totally sober, I will have a wee dram of a good single malt scotch and settle down with a good book. BTW Jed, Warsteiner is a great beer and Buffalo Trace ain’t too shabby either.
Alcohol + large needles = Bad Idea
Check.
“do not drink a bloody Mary while knitting a dragon.”
Pictures. Must have pictures.
@MJR: Well, I’m not much of a judge of Bourbon, but Buffalo Trace is the best I’ve tasted — better than Maker’s Mark. And it’ll have to do, since I don’t have any Dalwhinnie, or Balvenie double barrel. (Or Lagavulin, or Port Ellen, or …)

Audio might have been even more descriptive. However, this is a family blog.
“Alcohol + large needles = Bad Idea”
And further experimentation to prove that equation is not necessary. Just in case anyone was wondering.
Hey Joel as I was told many years ago there ain’t no such thing as a bad whiskey, some are just better than others.
Oh and Claire please be careful. The thought of needles sticking into you with blood coming out turning your Bloody Mary into, well, a real Bloody Mary is disturbing…
What’s your recipe? I use a combination of soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, brown sugar and pepper flakes.
Don’t drink and knit? : )
On another note, I thought you might enjoy this story.

LibertyNews — I used everything you list plus worcestershire sauce, honey, ground black pepper, cayenne pepper powder, garlic powder, and onion flakes. I went a little OD on the various peppers this time, unfortunately.
For those who don’t just want to take their chances, I also recommend Hi Mountain jerky seasoning kits (http://www.himtnjerky.com/jerky-cure-and-seasoning-kits/). The variety is good, there’s never an OD of anything, and the people who own the company are wonderful souls who’ve supported this blog and Joel’s over the years. If I’d have had any of their kits around I’d have started with those and maybe just have added an ingredient or two for customization.
jed — Whoa, I don’t think I could handle that bloody Mary. But at least the extras would help with the sobriety.
Jim B. — Hm, that’s quite a story. I must say I don’t quite believe it, but it is lovely. (I believe the dogs were in the funeral home; street dogs are all over some parts of Latin America. I just suspect that they didn’t only show up for that one woman’s funeral.) Anyhow, always nice to see a bunch of dogs hanging out and being peaceable.
BTW, I’ve let the impression of “blood in the bloody Mary” (good one, MJR) stand long enough. You can forget the images of me stabbing anybody with knitting needles (“See, the TSA was right after all!”). It was really only a collision between the complex stitches required to knit a dragon and my mental capabilities at that moment.
Yeah, but it is quite a story, isn’t it?
Yep, it’s a good story, Jim B. One of those I hope is true even as I question it.
So when you finish this dragon, you can put the eyes on it at cattywompus angles. ๐
Maybe she already did?
I have never, in my life, drunk a Bloody Mary. Just not that thrilled with tomato juice. However, with sufficient doctoring, perhaps it is, after all, palatable. I have been known to quaff a Snappy-Tom or Spicy V-8.
Have you given any thought to using the dragon as a prize for a raffle or contest? ๐ I’d still love to have it.
jed — V8 juice is the only way to go. No mere tomato juice will do. Vodka, V8, worcestershire (Lea & Perrins; accept no substitutes), lemon, maybe a little dill weed or fresh-ground pepper. Garnish with whatever compatible veggies are hanging about. (No cheeseburgers, though. ๐ )
ML — I’m so glad you like the dragon. I’m playing around with dragon variations now and am definitely thinking about your suggestion. I figure there’s quite a bit of time, though, this being more of a fall-winter item than a spring one.
Hm. What would be the spring/summer equivalent of a woolly dragon?
Karen — I was thinking more about putting the eyes on perfectly to detract from all the rest of the cattywompusness. ๐
Actually, the lace pattern that makes the dragon’s scales is complicated (by my intermediate-knitter standards, anyhow), but is wooooonderfully forgiving of mistakes. Still, I’m going on the bloody Mary wagon — at least as long as I’m knitting lace!
A non woolly dragon… hmmm. How about hemp yarn? Or a hemp/cotton blend. Would be great for spring or fall. And not everyone has hot summer temperatures either. I put on a scarf when I go out probably 6 months of the year. Some are wool, and some are light fibers, but all are useful. ๐
How about a variation of Elliot, in Peteโs Dragon? Doesnโt have to be precise, but he should have that friendly face.

They make neckwear with cooler bags inside. However, “fire-breathing dragon with cooler bags” doesn’t seem right.
