- 10 careers with the most psychopaths per capita. One is actually slightly surprising.
- Apparently artificial intelligence has reached the stage of producing bright but balky adolescents. (H/T PT)
- Well, not quite down to just two choices. There’s always a third choice when it comes to dealing (or not dealing) with out-of-control governments: creative disregard.
- A most epic community-wide checkpoint refusal. (Tip o’ hat to MSJ)
- Coming someday to a country near you? As of last night, only 40% of ATM machines in Greece still had money in them.
I’ve been collecting links on the Confederate flag idiocy — collecting links and absurdities by the thousands, it seems — then closing the pages again and letting them go.
I hope to have something to say about this cultural cleansing and how rapidly it’s consumed the brains of heretofore sane individuals and corporate managers. But frankly, the whole business is so flabbergasting I haven’t yet thought of the right words.
Joel had some appropriate words about it of course. I’ll try to find some good words myself.
So which one on the psychopath list was surprising?
Chefs.
Ah. Three words: Amy’s Baking Company.
Ah backatcha. Those sound like a bunch of mega-weirdos (and FWIW, I once worked for someone like that in a completely different field; a company that never had more than three employees managed to go through about 100 hirings and firings in a little over a year, all with much crazy yelling and accusing). But that doesn’t really say much about chefs in general; just the kind who go on TV and make a spectacle of themselves.
Claire– “But that doesn’t really say much about chefs in general; just the kind who go on TV and make a spectacle of themselves.”
I considered that possibility. But then I realized the basic premise of the show was that they could find enough idiot/crazy/hilariously incompetent restaraunteurs to support a whole series.
They just happened to hit the ratings jackpot with Amy.
Flags are like guns – tell me I can’t have it, and I immediately try to get one. Never saw the need, still don’t, but damned if I want someone to tell me I’m not permitted to get one.
The flag controversy has turned into an “everything confederate” controversy. There are moves being made to destroy all statues and memorials from the Civil war.
It’s reminding me of other times when statues, memorials, and symbols have been eliminated like that. Either when a dictator has been deposed, or when one is being built up.
Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Why do you think schools work so hard to erase it?
“Either when a dictator has been deposed, or when one is being built up.”
You said a mouthful there, Ellendra. Our dictator so far is more of a what than a who. But this is going to get much more “interesting” (in the sense of the Chinese curse) before long, I suspect.
History indeed. I think the “anti-racist” folks will succeed in banning the Confederate flag, and will be reintroduced to that bit of history called “Pyrrhic victory.”
Is TZP open for submissions?

I read an opinion that Gone With the Wind should never be shown again. Then there are the Huckleberry Finn haters. Because racism?
Fragmented right now.
Greece is simply the last in a long line of “the government will save you until the wheels fall off.” MSM is reporting each “new” development with bated breath, when anyone who reads history knows how the story ends.
They fed a computer a Hollywood diet and expected a definition of morality? It’s not the “artificial” intelligence that’s lacking.
“Is TZP open for submissions?”
Yes, absolutely! We’d be delighted to have a good guest post! You can just send to me, if you like and I’ll circulate it to the gang.
One the one hand, I can’t understand why the Greece situation is surprising anyone. I’ve lived in Greece twice, in the ’80s, and again almost ten years later. It was perfectly obvious — even to the Greeks — what was going to happen. (By the time I lived there the second time, money was so tight and strike so rampant that Athens was only hauling trash and maintaining streets in high volume tourist areas. If you went one street over from the sparkling clean highway along the beach, the neighborhoods were like something in a Chicago district where the machine was making an example out of an incalcitrant alderman; moonscaped streets and heaps of garbage 10-15 feet high. The stench was amazing. The protests back then over any talk of any limitation on gov pensions was downright entertaining… so long as you stayed out of the crowd.)
On the other hand, I suppose they have to pretend that bread-and-circus-and-pension spending policies couldn’t possibly have been predicted to have such an effect.
On the gripping hand, that second part is terribly important in America so that no one will ask, “Since we’re doing the same thing here, won’t the same thing happen to us if the credit lines dry up and creditors call the debts due?”
What exactly is the difference between the Taliban (or ISIS) destroying historic monuments and the liberals destroying historic monuments? Nothing.
Both are consumed with hatred and intolerance for any position but their own. They assume they have the moral right to control others because of their own, righteous, God ordained beliefs.
Back in my hippy days, we were fighting for “free speech” not “controlled speech”. Sigh
I was over in China about 1985. You could still see the old Buddhist shrines broken during the Cultural Revolution.
We all know what will happen in Greece. What we don’t know is what will happen here. I don’t believe the ruling class has ever run their economy into the ground with so many heavily-armed peasants as here, never mind complicating factors like the Internet. It should be interesting…
Tahn – “What exactly is the difference between the Taliban (or ISIS) destroying historic monuments and the liberals destroying historic monuments?”
WOW! I wish I had said that. Maybe someone from the left can answer.
What exactly is the difference between the Taliban (or ISIS) destroying historic monuments and the liberals destroying historic monuments?
Same as the difference between native American cave drawings and urban gang tagging. 😉
