Looks as if the Clinton machine may be setting up the ever-loyal Huma Abedin to take the fall for the email scandal. Since when is it an “intrusion” or a “comandeering” (even in the Washington Times) when an aide answers emails for the boss?
Your fingerprints can tell a lot more than whether you were at the scene of the crime.
The woman who dropped her newborn from a seventh-story window used to work for child protective services.
Karma’s a you-know-what. Those “scientists” who urged the fedgov to prosecute those who disagree with them have pulled their letter from the web (with lame excuses) after bloggers gave their lead guy’s finances a closer look.
“Parallel construction is a controversial investigative technique that takes information gained from sources like the NSA’s mass surveillance, covers up or lies about the sources, and then utilizes them in criminal investigations inside the United States.” Your gummint at work.
Ted Cruz, attempting to be relevant, appoints that unconscionable weasel and professional has-been, Bob Barr, to do outreach toward libertarians. (H/T JB)
That $750 pill that gained so much notoriety recently is (you will not be surprised to learn) more a product of the U.S. regulatory system than of some “greedy rogue” (however unsavory the rogue in question might actually be).
Dunno. Cloning pooches still seems creepy to me. Amazing. But creepy. Also wish this NPR piece had gone into more detail about how cloned dogs can differ so much, even in basic characteristics like markings, from their source material.
With respect (so to speak) to those “scientists”, they are clearly not scientists at all. Real science relies on debate and argument in the search for truth; these people seek only to stifle debate and force their views on others. That’s not science, it’s advocacy. They need to have their scientist licenses revoked.
Ted Cruz appointing Bob Barr to “reach out” to libertarians? Clearly he is clueless about libertarians. I don’t know a single one who has the least regard for Barr; most have outright distain for him. His selection as the LP’s Presidential candidate in 2008 is widely (and correctly, in my opinion) viewed as an horrendous mistake and an embarrassment to the party (not that that latter point matters much).
“Parallel construction” is an outrage and should be a criminal offense. We now know that the FBI routinely shares constitutionally tainted data with local law enforcement agencies, with explicit instructions not to divulge its source or to directly use it in criminal cases; rather, they are supposed to use it to plausibly develop the same information from alleged “parallel” sources. There are documented instances where prosecutors have outright lied to courts about the source of their information, on the instructions of the FBI. Anyone who participates in such unconstitutional activity (either sharing the information or receiving and using it) should be sent to jail. Do that a few times and the practice will quickly cease.

Just a comment on “The Martian”. I’ve got the book on my Kindle. I bought it for next to nothing it seems a couple of years ago. I checked and the price has gone up considerably lately. It was a thoroughly entertaining read but the most interesting thing about it was the science involved. Such as how the stranded astronaut made oxygen and other little tricks using available material to produce what he really needed. The author is obviously well read and well educated to be able to put the whole thing together.

It isn’t. Even if it was, the problem isn’t who opened the emails, it’s that classified messages were on a private unsecured server in the first place. That’s on Clinton.
There are bosses/commanders who think “I’m special. I don’t have to follow the rules for the little people” and those who hold themselves to a higher standard and lead by example. Which do you think is more effective?
To be fair to ICD-10, there are lots of ways to get hurt around a cow, like getting stepped on or caught between beef and a hard place.
There’s the Hunter Ed joke about the way to tell the difference between black bears and grizzlies. Grizzly dung smells of pepper spray and has bear bells in it.
Saw The Martian today. There are SF writers who get the science right, and those who get the characters right. Wier does both. It doesn’t hurt that Scott and Damon were involved in the movie.
“Big movies tend to be based on sort of a well-known underlying material, whether it’s comic books, or a remake of another movie,” Kinberg said. “It’s rare that something comes from a truly original place, and that’s what Andy’s book gave us.”
There’s a lesson there that Hollywood is determined to ignore, and we’ve just been blogging on that tendency.

To be fair, there are employees like that too.

About that new law in Indiana, where I live….I do hope such common sense self-defense laws go nation-wide. Maybe those thug ‘swat’ night breakins by the police will finally stop. Home invasion is home invasion, badge or no badge.

Oh, absolutely the problem was classified messages being on a private server. But don’t you see? The busy, dedicated Hillary Clinton was out saving the world while her aides were solely responsible for this whole situation! They abused their power and her trust. And after all she did for them, too.

I can see Hillary considering that pitch, right up until someone tells her that it will remind folks how much “safer” the world is after her watch.

None of this has made any sense from the beginning. Nobody has ever indicated the least reason why Mz Clinton would want to expose “classified messages” in the first place. Her bizarre tissue of lies from the earliest days would indicate a sincere, if warped, passion for keeping secrets of all kinds. She had to know just what her fellow conspirators would think of exposing such secrets, and she is nothing if not dependent on many of those others – in one way or another – as are all politicians. The back scratching never ends, even long after leaving “office.”
So, perhaps these revealed “secrets” are deliberate plants, immaterial except as a smoke screen. Time will tell, but I suspect that if she had been careless with, or divulged anything that truly would harm other politicians and the government, the various alphabet soup gangs would already have her nicely laid out in a coffin, with a death certificate showing some reasonable “cause” besides murder. I don’t think the Clintons have enough clout to be exempt…
And, last but not least, what sort of “secrets” could possibly damage any legitimate security of the people in America? Would not those secrets rather reveal the filthy and destructive activities of the supposed “rulers” and their minions? Why would anyone who wants individual liberty oppose those being revealed… just as Snowden and others have done?
Clinton has not joined Snowden, Manning and Assange… by any means, so something else is going on. And Mz Clinton may well be evil and disloyal to her co-conspirators… but she’s not stupid.

I love your tab clearings, Claire, because they contribute to heavily to the ridiculous number of tabs I’ve got open at once. Currently sitting at close to 100 and counting. 🙂
The stove link is pretty cool. Slowly trying to convince my wife that the next house should be smaller, and on more land. Coming close to being successful as she watches me struggle with balancing being dad with the immense number of repairs and changes to be done. That’s the kind of thing that is cheap enough that it lends itself to all sorts of messing around with secondary burn tubes and efficiency improvements…Perfect for experimentation when daughter 1 is a bit older.
“Don’t be evil.” – Yeah. That did go out the door a while ago, didn’t it. Taking steps to de-Googlify my life, but that’s difficult. I do require a smartphone both for personal use and for work, but ultimately, a rooted, bootloader-unlocked phone running Xposed and XPrivacy is enough for me, I think.
The cloning article has a very “this is for rich people and so it’s a bad thing” vibe to it. I’m about to lose a cat, and thinking on that, while I like my cats, I haven’t met one that I’d clone. My husky? I might consider it if money weren’t an object.

Arrgh! Sorry to add to the chaos, M. 100 open tabs? I believe my brain would explode out my ears.

I just think Monica Crowley has it right on the Hillary scandal. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/aug/19/monica-crowley-why-obama-is-trying-to-torpedo-hill/?page=all
