- The barebones truth about life in the trackless woods. (H/T MJR)
- Well, that’s one reason to join ISIS.
- Larry Pratt: time to make it clear that we will not comply.
- Crybullies, crymobs, and the left’s whiny war on free speech. That last paragraph is a doozy. (Tip o’ hat to D.B.)
- Court rules for husband (and contract) in frozen embryos case. (Having a baby — or not having one — is a lot more complicated than it used to be.)
- The Che Cafe is in the red and fans want California taxpapers and university students to go on subsidizing it.
- Upon request, the FBI has released its files on two of my publishers. 🙂 (H/T A.G. in comments)
- The released FBI docs give the impression that they really weren’t much interested in Loompanics or Paladin. But as I wrote in this 1998 Wolfe’s Lodge “Sound Off,” I have a bit of evidence to the contrary. (Once again a big thank you to Bill St. Clair for keeping that ancient site alive in his archives. Thanks also to the anonymous designer; I was struck again by what a beautiful site it was for its era (and still). Even now it’s a wonderful place for a rainy-day visit.)
- The latest specials from Backwoods Home: give up to 10 gift subscriptions at half price; buy a copy of Backwoods Home Cooking and get Ask Jackie Homestead Cooking free. NFI on my part. These offers are good through Sunday midnight.

Ha Ha. That crybully article could just as well be describing right wing christians. The US has become a festering hole of crybabies, paranoids, and neurotics on all sides of the spectrum. No matter what your position, some one’s aggin it, and not only are they wrong, they’re oppressing you, or stealing from you. The rich are stealing from the poor and middle class, the poor are stealing from the rich and middle class. Immigrants are taking over. The government wants our guns. Students don’t feel safe if there’s someone on campus who has an opinion they don’t like. White men are killing masses of people because of perceive sleights. War on women, POC, whites, christians/christmas, jews, islam, atheists….
Shit. There rant over.

Yes, and I wish someone would have archived all or most of Sierra Times. Not so pretty, but lots of good content.
Claire, time for a Linux update?
Part of the beauty is – no advertisements. It is a fine site.
Glad to know Loompanics protected my name and address 🙂
Indeed, Brian. You can find a lot of the Sierra Times content via the “wayback machine,” but there is no navigation among the pages. You have to know what you are looking for.
I could have done an archive of the whole site if I’d thought of it sooner. I had most of it on my hard drive when I quit as general manager/editor, but didn’t back it up. And you know the rest of that story. It’s long gone now, unfortunately.
Back up your stuff!
Well, then again, maybe not. The only thing I got at the wayback machine was on line poker… If someone else knows how to use that site better, I’d love to get some live links to old ST stuff.
It’s a common stereotype; if you live off-grid, you’re a hippie or apocalypse freak by default. Vannini says that’s a romanticized myth—one largely fuelled by photographers drawn to the visual appeal of Woodstock caricatures under the smothered glow of oil lamps in remote cedar cabins.
“People who break the mold don’t fit in a mold.” Who could have seen that coming?
Thanks for the visit back to the 90s. It reminded me why I’m more optimistic than most of the whippersnappers.
The Che story reminded me of back in the day when the rust belt was just getting started and factories were closing right and left. One of the commonly-suggested solutions was to turn the plant over to the workers, and eliminate the greedy, profit-seeking management. Turns out unions suck at running businesses just like collectives do.
“Crybullies.” I’ll be using that.
What hurts me about the SJW culture is that they’re not just “The glass is half empty” folks. They’re “The glass is bone dry so I have to piss in it” negative.
If they don’t quit digging, their lives are really going to suck.
Regarding the reasons for the joining of ISIS, I’ve recently just started thinking that if the middle east were to get some businesses going there and provide jobs, then maybe we won’t have as many terrorism problems. After all it worked for China along with some other places. Keep them busy with work, let them have some money to live on and get some luxuries, they won’t care about hurting others. At least for the most part.
I miss Loompanics. Paladin Press is fine, but it’s not the same (and its catalogs are nowhere near as much fun). I’ve purchased from both, so undoubtedly I’m on some FBI list somewhere, their protestations to the contrary notwithstanding.
I don’t own “101 Things” but the “Freedom Outlaw’s Handbook” has an honored place in my library.
Jim B, I’m sure you’re correct, but it’s not going to happen. There’s not a single state in the Middle East (other than Israel) which has a functioning economic system or honors the rule of law. Businesses require defensible property rights and access to capital in order to succeed, and both are in woefully short supply in the ME.
I agree with Larry Pratt – non-compliance is the order of the day. However, I suggest he drop the “law-abiding” term, since the first thing that happens is that failure to comply becomes a felony in and of itself. Due to laws like that, NY has several million, as far as i can tell – all gun owner / felons, thanks to the SAFE act, CT has some half million or more ‘administratively created felons” who were NOT felons the day before the law was signed and did nothing between that and the next day, and WA has it’s share – all gun owners. all ‘law-abiding’ generally, but felons by definition of the state.
So the hell with them. Let’s just all say ‘gun owners will not comply’. Criminals already do not, and we are all being defined as criminals because we don’t comply. So why keep stressing ‘law-abiding’, when if we were law-abiding, we would do whatever the law required – disable our guns, get them out of state, register them for eventual confiscation, or surrender them to the local police. And the same thing for magazines too – destroy, keep them out of state, surrender them or register them – again probably for eventual confiscation.
So I most emphatically will not comply. Want my guns? Sure, just let me unload them all in your direction first.
lol – I went to the Che Cafe about twenty years ago to see a show – about twenty minutes in they blew the power and ended up lighting the rest of the evening with candles.
“The released FBI docs give the impression that they really weren’t much interested in Loompanics or Paladin.”
Oh, I know that one. Given the way our overlords tend to work, I’m sure they do indeed give that impression. Just enough to serve as The Final Word On The Matter…right before they go after someone else. “Oh, what are you paranoids worrying about? You were all concerned about that, and it turned out to be nothing–see, we released all these shiny things whut right prove it. Can you just let us do our jobs now? (Now, again, shut up and pay your taxes and nobody gets hurt.*)”

* Well. Maybe nobody gets hurt. And if someone does, he totally had it coming. Sealed Evidence(TM). Ongoing Investigation(TM). Furtive Movement(TM). Officer Safety(TM). They Started That Fire Themselves(TM). Look, a monkey! Shut up.
Kevin, yup, that’s about the situation.
I don’t think I mentioned it in that 1998 Sound-Off, but the day the FBI ordered a copy of 101 Things they actually ordered 100 different books from Loompanics. So yeah, they were interested alright.
It’s been a long time. Wow, 18 years now since they placed that order. But if I recall correctly, the wonderful people at Loompanics wouldn’t accept a federal purchase order and made them pay cash.
100 different books…
In my silver-lining moments I see a few people picking up the crazy books from the paranoid fringe, and having an “Oh. Wait.” experience.
[It’s time for law-abiding gun owners to let it be known that they will not comply.]
It’s time for gun owners to get over the fetish of being law-abiding. Either be law-abiding and hand your guns in, or don’t. You can’t have it both ways.
Thanks for that article about life in the boonies. I’m pretty much a recluse, but even I need to see a human face now and then. But yeah, I can do plumbing and electrical. I don’t see how one can get through life without knowing that. All it takes is a modicum of curiosity and a little experience. But then, my knowledge in cooking is close to zero, so I should STFU. 🙂
Paul, I get annoyed at the “law abiding” nonsense too… more and more often these days. The person who says that they carry “everywhere it is legal” is just fooling him/herself. Those places where it is “illegal” are where they might most likely need it.
The law I abide is the law of non-aggression. Otherwise, not so much. 🙂
