An early look at Vin’s new novel: The Miskatonic Manuscript

Vin_MiskatonicManuscript_120215

The Miskatonic Manuscript by Vin Surprynowicz isn’t officially out yet. Release date is December 11, but I just received a beautiful hardcover review copy.

The teaser on the dust jacket says in part:

What if Rhode Island horror writer H.P. Lovecraft didn’t just imagine the “resonator” in his 1920 short story “From Beyond”? What if Henry Annesley actually built the machine that allowed him to see into the Sixth Dimension -– and allowed creatures from The Other Side to invade us here? …

[And] “What if they fought a War on Drugs . . . and someone fought back?”

Good questions — especially that second one.

This is the second in the adventures of rare book dealers Matthew Hunter and Chatal Stevens, who you may have enjoyed in The Testament of James

Having just returned a very good book (one of Terry Pratchett’s final novels, Dodger) to the library this morning, I’ll get right on this and have a review soon.

Oh, and the censorship on the sexy lady’s backside (which is more visible when you click to embiggenate) is mine. Didn’t figure The Duffys would want nekkid butts on their website. But the classic Boris Vallejo art (and Carl Bussjaeger cover design) is on full display over at Vin’s (and sometimes The Brunette’s) blog.

Back with a full review closer to the eleventh.

    How callipygian.

Not sure why I haven’t read The Testament of James yet. I thoroughly enjoyed The Black Arrow. I’ll have to put it on my list, and this one as well.

I was never a Lovecraft fan, though I have a passing familiiarity with the Cthulhu mythos. I’ll have to check out From Beyond.

Good thing is wasn’t the 8th dimension – then they’d have Lectroids to deal with.

Oh. Er. Um. Now that you put it like that, I can see that phrasing may have been … erm, somewhat unfortunate.

True. OTOH, maybe certain persons just have dirty little minds (though I do admit that a nekkid butt on a Boris Vallejo woman could trigger dirty-little-mindness even in a saint, never mind a Vallejo butt coupled with an unfortunate turn of phrase).

The thing is, IMHO, Boris Vallejo has mellowed out in his old age. I sometime skim his books, so I think his earlier works were more… “interesting” then. He may have become better in his techniques in his later works, but there were definitely something in his earlier works.

I haven’t seen much of Vallejo’s recent work, but that cover looks like his classic work to me. I’m most familiar with his 1980s stuff. The illustration Vin chose is dated 1997.

A bare butt on the cover certainly can’t hurt sales – at least where I am concerned. 🙂

    Claire,

I assure you my mind is ‘fully grown’ and I use appropriate adult beverages to regularly cleanse it to prevent an excessive accumulation of dirt.

And no, I will never be a saint. Nor do I wish to be!

I appreciate your comments. Thank you!
