Ah, telemarketers. Used to be they were all at least human, even when they used the auto-thingie dialer. Then it went to recorded spiels, expecting you to call them back. I. don’t. think. so. And am totally astonished if anyone does, since they wouldn’t do it if some fraction of the gullible didn’t call…

Got harassing phone calls, for YEARS, on a regular basis from some collection agency demanding to have contact information on someone I never heard of. They followed me from Calif. to Wyoming, incredibly.

I was getting something like two or more telemarketing and other junk calls each day and decided it was time for a change of strategy. Instead of being polite, or trying to reason with them, I just simply hang up at the first hint of either telemarketing or harassment. Works like a charm now, even though it took a year or so. If I say hello and there is dead air… I hang up. If a person starts with a spiel (I really hate the smarmy kind that starts with my first name and asking, “how are you?”), I hang up as fast as I can. In fact, I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t talk to very many people on the phone because I can’t understand much, and my actual friends and family know this and don’t call… so it’s a really safe bet that a strange voice on the telephone is not someone I want to talk to.

Bottom line is that now I don’t usually have more than one of these gnat brained calls a month. I love the guy’s convoluted games with these callers, but I’m not qualified to do that. Maybe he could set it up as a program and sell it? For me now, just hanging up seems to be quite sufficient.

I was looking for a way to contact people (by email) on that island to send them a link to TOLFA. They should recognize they have a choice and an opportunity.

It seems the only reason that Maine island needs taxes is to pay their bureaucratics and county taxes. They should stop using county services.

If you read through the Jolly Roger Phone Co information he does provide a way to use his service for free (you have to link his robot in via a three-way call). And he’s started a Kickstarter fundraiser to start a real company offering the service (which does cost money to maintain). It’s probably worth kicking in a few bucks to get it rolling.

At the moment the big problem here in South Carolina isn’t ordinary telemarketers, but rather political surveys. Our presidential preference primaries are in a few weeks (we’re third in the nation), and the number of surveys (and pseudo-surveys, which are thinly-disguised campaign ads) is unbelievable. I will be so glad when the primaries are over and the rest of the country goes back to alternately ignoring and ridiculing us!

I saw that this morning, jed. Given what they do to us and our privacy, couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.

Well, they’ve got a teacher and a teacher’s aide for two (2) elementary school students. That should tell you how economically they run things.

Do the island they live on have any infrastructure? Roads? Electrical grid? Sanitation?. etc.?

I figure the roads and the grid are a State concerns at the very least. They may need no more than $140,000 for the teacher and aide. (Have you priced teachers lately?) Everyone needs garbage pickup and snowplowing services. Then again that can be contracted out privately. Law enforcement can be handled by the State Troopers.

So, what do they spend the rest on?
