A small, light moment

Lillies-02_051116

Who even knew that these were growing in my yard? I rescued them this morning from a tangle of blackberries, wild rose bushes, and twisty morning glory vines.

Not that they needed rescue. They were doing quite fine before I reached them.

My kind of flowers. Independent. Take care of themselves. Survivors.

Then I go and kill three of their blossoms. Bad human.

The lilies submitted quietly, but the blackberries and rose bushes fought back and maimed me. So floral justice was served.

Have you ever given much thought to the origin of the custom of displaying hacked off sex organs?

Yes, beautiful. The flower stems even coordinate with the walls. And I LOVE the vase. (The table’s nice too.:-))

An advantage of living in a valley.

Well, yeah, these aren’t really lilies of the valley, but then those are highly poisonous.

When I “rescue” plants, I get the bulbs and roots too, and put them in a place where they can thrive. This includes blackberries as well as flowers.

Actually, by cutting the flowers you strengthened the plant itself. Things like that left totally alone eventually revert to their smaller, less showy wild state if they survive, and most don’t. Even a forest left strictly alone will eventually burn…

So, wild flowers and trees need to be pruned at times by something or someone. And cultivated plants left to go wild like those lilies need it even more.

I’ve always liked Robert Mapplethorpe’s Calla Lily. Looking for that one, I discovered there are more of them.

    @Bear: Ouch!

Nice flowers. Where’s the blackberries? sniff – sniff do I smell cobbler?

I see that the reading chair is well stocked with H2O and diligently guarded as well. (wink)

    Stay safe,

If the world were left to us guys it would certainly be drab. All I have to decorate my shop is a couple of worn-out pistons hanging by their connecting rods from nails in the wall.

Screw the flowers, CW, I want to know more about that side table! While the colors don’t appeal to me, the construction, especially those legs, is quite cool. What’s the story?

Thank you, jed. Yep, TXCOMT, that is “Doorway to the Sun” — so named by Commentariat member Pat.

Originally a solid pine, 70s-vintage, dark walnut lump of ugliness. I imagine it once sitting beside either a waterbed or a cheap knockoff of a Mission-style couch.

“Where’s the blackberries? sniff – sniff do I smell cobbler?”

Bit early in the season, capn. But cobbler sounds like a good idea for later this summer. Mmmmm.
