- The overcriminalization problem. Including the Deadly Lemonade-Stand Threat.
- Oh gadzooks. The sheer chutzpah! The ironic lack of all awareness of irony. Obama uses his accidental prowess as America’s greatest gun salesman to “prove” he’s not out to take our guns.
- Mostly, “inspirational” stories make me gag. But this one’s the real deal.
- Supposedly, this article about Hillary Clinton’s upcoming legal fate appeared on HuffPo, then was quickly pulled. I’m not sure. And nobody else has picked up on it, so it’s probably full of major bogusness. But it’s pretty “inspirational,” too.
- He no longer floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee, or defies the government. Muhammad Ali. Dead at 74.
- Hahahahaha. Couric and her producers aren’t merely lying hypocrites. They’re gun criminals. And it’s not some obscure bureaucratic paperwork thingie they violated, either, but one of the basic known restrictions (however unjust and idiotic it actually is) on gun purchasing.
- The lost women of Enlightenment science.
- I am of the “dogs domesticated themselves” school, rather than the “man domesticated dogs” school. And I figure my ignorant opinion counts at least as much as anybody else’s ignorant opinion. 🙂 But now there’s an intriguing theory that, no matter who domesticated who, it it happened separately, twice in two far-flung locations.

When things like the domesticated dogs story come up I often think of the pyramids being on two different continents. Things like that seem to happen a lot. People in far flung places trying to develop a flying machine and the A-bomb come to mind as well.
Who knows, maybe the dogs were highly valued and there was breeding espionage and stolen variants. It’s interesting. Thinking of early man I would reckon they put the animals to work from the start. The whole pet thing is probably much later.
And Katie (the full Rather) Couric folks running guns, too funny. Nobody will ever get in trouble though. Look at fast & furious.
I could watch the back to back to back clips of surfing for a long time, it’s the talking about it for 10 minutes between runs that makes it boring when live.
Apparently it’s inspirational women weekend (IWW). You should do it more often. I didn’t know any of that history. Interesting as well.
I don’t see anything unlikely about the notion that dogs were domesticated independently at different times and places. Personally I’ve always doubted that domestic dogs actually descend from wolves, which seem to lack the knack for treating humans as multi-tools with thumbs the way dogs can. There are plenty of wild dogs and dog-like creatures other than wolves. Not that I’m basing that on anything solid, obviously they can interbreed so I can’t imagine how you’d prove it either way.
But as for multiple independent domestications; why not? Lots of very basic things were invented at different times and places: Monumental architecture, agriculture, steel, stirrups … how many different cultures domesticated horses? Or oxen? I doubt it all came from one original place.
Well, so what if Katie & Co. broke a few federal laws? Their progressive little hearts were in the
rightleft place. They’ll be Gregoryed.Criminal law should be used only if a person intentionally flouts the law or engages in conduct that is morally blameworthy or dangerous.
O. M. G. Justification for every statist ever. Now I have to go hurl.
I agree with Joel. The ancestors of dogs (horses and people, too, for that matter) did likely develop independently around the world.
We are not the only species capable of perceiving an advantage to symbiosis. As parts of the earth sweltered or froze, canines of every type might well have latched themselves onto the human community in self-preservation. There are far more varieties of canine than there are humans; I doubt that diversity came about from the same lineage. Looks, size, personality, and inherent abilities all reared their heads in response to needs and geography, and the canine was intelligent enough to utilize human cultural practices as well.
(As example, the coyote is moving in on civilization today and, given time and opportunity, he might well mate himself out of existence as another canid – the dogote – takes his place in the future.)
Ah, dogs and their uses. Lots of wonderful history there. And then, with their usual brilliance, the Pentagon decided they needed robot dogs… It’s almost funny. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/dec/30/us-marines-reject-bigdog-robot-boston-dynamics-ls3-too-noisy
I am currently breaking some “laws”- I am raising a pair of orphaned raccoons. In town! Oh the horror! Nemesis is very concerned that loose lips might tip off the local lawthug and bring a fine- or (what she probably really worries about) a confrontation. I’ve never even bothered keeping my criminality in that area a secret in the past.
It would be so satisfying to see both those execrable Clintons behind bars, finally. It’s difficult to imagine that happening given the current politicized and thoroughly corrupt Department of (In)Justice, but it could occur with a different administration. That’s probably enough reason to vote for Trump right there.
Kent, ’round these parts there are several levels of licensing and inspections for animal rescue. the dreaded Racoon is an ever dangerous class 2 threat and must be rescued and rehabilitated accordingly. I tried to figure out what the different classes are and what animals fall into each class and what the procedures are but it gives you such a headache. It’s mind numbing. Only gov can give you a headache and make your mind numb at the same time.
Skunks and bats are a special sub category…yup, they lost me.
The most damming and dangerous part of what President Obama said was that he could and did put people on the no-fly list for VISITING A WEB SITE.
He wants to do this for gun purchases also. How many amendments of the Bill of Rights does this violate? Scary.
