Weekend links

  • Obama really is going out of his way to leave a legacy of spite and pettiness. Poor Cubans.
  • Improvised weapons are lying all around your house. A lot of you know this. Good thing to be aware of.
  • To whatever extent I still care about Congress and their doings, I’ve always thought single subject bills would go a long way toward eliminating the worst of the worst law-spewing. All bills should also be readable at high school level and have their provisions completely written out (none of this, “the word ‘commercial’ is dropped from some drivers license ID bill we passed last year” business).
  • OTOH, politicians will always be politicians as the laugh-a-minute pols of Seattle are showing with their scamalicious “democracy vouchers.”
  • But this is good. Dairy farmers and the Lummi Indian tribe sign a compact to work together to clean up polluted waters. I did not see one mention of government in the article. Which probably means the EPA will soon be rushing in to screw up the entire effort.
  • Seven daily habits from great writers.

Inquiring minds want to know the daily writing habits of the great Claire Wolfe.

Claire, I have a shillelagh that packs a mean punch that I will use as an improvised weapon if I have to. Never mess around with and older guy and his shillelagh! 🙂

When I give the self defense class, one of the exercises we do is to tour the classroom (or home we are meeting in) and give serious thought to all of the objects that could be used as a weapon, and how we might use them for such. We look at what might be available in other places, such as a store or other business, a park, an elevator or staircase, and such things as the average parking lot! I’ve thought about developing a whole class on this subject alone, since we almost always go over the time limit on this section. I’d like to develop more material for this, such as how to defend yourself AGAINST some of these improvised weapons… assuming you don’t have a gun, of course. 🙂

I prefer to carry my gun always, and simply don’t enter places where it isn’t welcome or “allowed.” In Wyoming, there are very few places like that, of course, but the exercise is valuable anyway. You just never know, and not everyone is willing to carry all the time.

I lucked into an improvised weapon when I bought a heavy leather bookmark to keep pages open on even the largest books. It has a heavy metal disk sewn into each end and makes a wickedly-nice blackjack. Have been thinking about getting another one to keep in my car.

A good sturdy walking stick can be used in a pinch also.

I’d like to read that, ML. I’ve often thought that, for every improvised weapon in my house, if it was grabbed before I got to it, what could I use to counter it.

I don’t know any great Claire Wolfe.

I like to think that the lesser Claire Wolfe does her writing in bed, munching nuts and dried apricots (as long as Ava will tolerate such inactivity). But I probably do most of my real writing walking in the woods, letting ideas flow in. Ava likes that process better, too.

I think inside every office and school room, (anywhere really with a large number of people with throwing arms), there should be a box of canned foods for donations prominently displayed, (maybe two boxes in strategic locations). Two cans each for 10 people, or five cans for a couple of baseball player, and getting through that doorway becomes a major obstacle.

Via Say Uncle, here is a related article: How not to get killed at the airport. Improvised weapons? Yep. Some overlap. I like the padlock.

Possibly not quickly deployable, but a tuna can in a sock could do some damage. (I don’t know about you, but I store these items in separate locations.)
