- Why meteorologists are so worried as this beast heads for Florida.
- Some Caribbean islands are 95 percent devastated.
- Sir Richard Branson and his staff braved it out in a fortified wine cellar on Necker island, raiding the stocks.
- No, don’t #livelikezander. Surfing hurricane waves is just stupid.
- On the lighter side, Harvey and Irma Schluter are rather bemused to become disaster trivia.
- Have a look at this satellite photo of three hurricanes all in a row: Katia, Irma, Jose.
- Why so much of the media scolded the Cajun Navy instead of cheering them on.

From the Cajun Navy story:
Texas’s “libertarian” culture, leading to an “insufficiency of Houston’s city planning” and “willful ignorance of climate change” on the part of politicians, had made it necessary to rely on private citizens.
Obviously this “reporter” (the one writing, not the one quoting) has never interacted with Houston and Harris County deep blue politics. These are the voters who for 18 years have sent Sheila Jackson Lee to Congress.
Disaster: An event that overwhelms normal government responses.
Three hurricanes lined up in a row looks to be as bad as it gets IMHO. I would hate to be facing it.
Fortunately nobody’s going to get hit with all three. But Jose is indeed coming right along in Irma’s wake. There’s a harrowing thread going on about this in the public section of the Cabal, with Ellendra giving reports about a honeymoon couple trapped on St. Maartens having survived Irma, but now facing Jose with no resources.
Which state or federal agency has personnel who spend more time in small boats than private-sector citizens? In any one state, maybe a dozen game wardens or USF&W guys. But the “private navies” number in thousands.
So where are these pros gonna come from? Maybe FEMA will hire “contractors”, and use up a lot of red tape, hiring guys from the Cajun Navy.
I would guess here where I live something like 80% of the people who ran shelters and otherwise provided emergency services were volunteers, and I sure didn’t hear any of the professionals complaining about it.
And we weren’t anywhere near the damaged areas.
didn’t read the link about Branson because I would like to believe that he has a cellar specifically for port wine (aka a fortified wine cellar)
