Some things are still worth celebrating

I wasn’t going to blog today because a) I don’t do “on demand” blogitude on special occasions and b) because the holiday formerly known as Independence Day has gotten so depressing.

But I ran into this and remembered that some American traditions are still very much worth celebrating:

H/T Never Yet Melted

Bear’s got a good reminder, too.

Right with you on the fatigue of writing repeat anniversary topics. I for one don’t have just the right words for why that feels wrong (and just to be clear I can’t in conscience begrudge others the indulgence), but for me at least, somehow it does.

And even moreso than I thought, apparently. I was a bit surprised to find, as I took a quick peek back at my own writing, to find that I actually haven’t written anything original on Independence Day since the Examiner days, in 2009. Each year after that, I apparently looked back, concluded that I didn’t need to add anything further, and either ignored it entirely, linked the original article (which is now defunct, of course), or reprinted the content.

Oddly enough, I don’t feel the need to update it this year, either. πŸ™‚

Thank you, Claire, for continuing to do what you do. It matters. I’m still essentially dark on the Interteubz these days (except for the Craftygrass blog, which is music and therefore tends to mitigate, rather than exacerbate, the outrage fatigue), but I’m still a reliable lurker here–as ever, for the human perspective that you bring, which really isn’t like anyone else.

As the late and much missed Will Grigg said, Happy Insurrection Day!
