Pantry in Progress, too

The Wandering Monk finished his part of the job in the afternoon and this is where we left the pantry-to-be.

I’m hugely pleased. Yes, it’s just a plain-vanilla pantry with no fancy features, but it’s going to make it much easier to keep everything organized, easy to find, and (yes, Bear) simpler to rotate.

Pat’s original blueprint called for one shelf to be extended to make a desk or a landing spot for newly purchased groceries. I really like that idea and will aim to retrofit a small desk between those 2×2 supports eventually.

I’m relieved finally to use those doors! I got them years ago at a charity rummage sale ($4 for the pair; damn, I love bargain-hunting). First I intended to use them in a linen closet. That didn’t work out. Next they were intended for the bedroom closet. That didn’t work out. As of today they’d been sitting outside in the weather or on the screen porch so long that it took an hour and a half to scrub the grime and spiders off them.

But they’ve found a home, and that’s one more bit of construction clutter that’s clutter no more. Only thing now is to move a doorknob one panel leftward, which will take me about five minutes.

One regret: I don’t have sufficient leftover drywall to finish the exterior. We drywalled inside the doorway and I can manage one sidewall with what remains in my stash. But the rest will have to wait until January when the Monk and I set about finishing the laundry/sewing room and have more wallboard to cannibalize.

Friday will be a long day of cleanup and organization. But I’m looking forward to that.

Well, almost. The organizing part, yeah. The cleanup not so much. Weather forced us to do all the cutting indoors and a worm-drive circular saw like the Monk uses (this one) can really, really — I mean really — throw sawdust a long way.

    Ah! I have the exact same circular saw πŸ™‚ and yes, it throws a lot of sawdust.

    The pantry looks good. I love the feeling of finally putting something (the doors in your case) to good use after it has been sitting around for ages.

    Have fun organizing. I hope the cleanup goes quickly and smoothly.

    TThe Wandering Monk did a good job; he’s a keeper. Actually leaving the sidewalls as they are will increase the accessibility to your stash. You could use picture framing, frame out the sidewalls, and people will think they are Andy Warhol paintings.😊

    Very nice indeed, including the doors which look shiny-new!

    I’ll echo Fred with a twist: instead of drywalling over the side wall sections, have you considered making curtains out of an old bedsheet, or perhaps a translucent shower curtain? Then you could arrange some “frequently used” items right there for easy access without even opening a door. And you could get some natural light inside.

    Also, the cat would love being able to sneak inside the pantry for a snooze hideout. ;^)

    Classic Andy Warhol — but with modern interactive features. Add and remove the Campbell’s soup cans at will, LOL.

    And free.and.true, that’s a clever idea about the curtains. I do want to hide the pantry with drywall, but it’s funny you should mention giving access to the cat. It’s always been hard to find a place to feed her where Ava can’t swoop in to enjoy catfood leftovers. This morning, I noticed the cat slipping into the pantry between the new studs, and I thought, “Hmmmmm … cat flap.” I may just leave a little opening for her; clearly she’s going to like it in there.

    It is quite an impressive piece of equipment, isn’t it? Much more powerful and versatile than my ancient Craftsman. I’ve tried it out and found it uncomfortable in my girly hands, but The Monk wields it well.

    I was going to suggest cabinet doors over the sides, at least on one side or in one area. I see curtains were suggested already.

    I am finding it handy simply to reach in through the bare stud walls to grab items. I may have to reconsider my intention of drywalling. Cabinet doors, curtains … I don’t know. But your suggestions are interesting.

    Looks good Claire; I hope it serves you well. I’m a little late to the Pantry raid; but, may I kindly suggest that bedrooms represent additional – and hidden – storage venues:

    – regular cans can be put on plastic (fast-food-like) serving trays – or ‘milk crates’ cut-down in height – and slid in/out from under the bed;
    – larger (#10) cans in sufficient quantity can be amassed on the floor, box spring discarded, and mattress put back on top, for proper sleeping height, and longer-term preps;
    – dresser/cabinet tops.

    If you can’t go left or right, go down, or up, instead. All contingent on a relatively dry and cool bedroom, of course.
