I’m a few days late finding this, but J.D. Tuccille gives new dimension (and his always cheery Outlaw spirit) to a topic that’s been much discussed in these parts: “Why not opt out of government control?”

The author is channeling Harry Browne and in the process highlights the divide between anarcho-libertarians and small government libs. I’m mostly in the small government camp. As much as we all would like to be left alone and go about our lives ignoring or evading the reach of authority, the sad reality is that it will find us. Edward Snowden has exposed how deep that reach is going. Believing that a fascist police state will wither away is a nice fantasy. Like the pacifists with their slogans about ending war – I am against WAR! – yes, good for you. But WAR will find you no matter where you hide.
I’m one who sees it as a matter of the government is leaving us whether we like it or not. Best to prepare. They are broke, and they can’t stop the disease that will eventually kill them, and many of us… but through neglect, not their actions. It’s like asking a wolf to eat berries, it ain’t gonna happen, they will starve rather than change their nature. Look at the (un) Affordable Health Care Act. It was designed to be an all encompassing straight jacket for us all. Instead it’s destroying (and the worse is yet to come) all semblance of control.
[the sad reality is that it will find us.]
That’s not reality, if you actually give it a try. I have ignored govco in certain ways for years now without any repercussions. I know others who have too.
As someone figured out, without even trying we commit 3 felonies a day. Yet we are not in jail. If that is so, why not commit some on purpose?
The state’s greatest weapon is voluntary compliance. People think they have to do things they really don’t.
One can ignore government to a point. I have for years. But as Snowden has shown, the time is quickly approaching when that will be almost impossible. We will soon have no place to hide. Without engaging the beast and neutralizing it now, I’m afraid we will find ourselves in the position of medieval serfs at best.
It has been pointed out that regimes like the former Soviet Union and its satellites collapsed without a shot, a collapse brought about by economic disintegration. One should also remember the 70 years of Gulags, purges, and salt mines that led up to it. Or the millions killed during the Cultural Revolution. Or the Killing Fields.
Our leaders are arming themselves with drones. There is also a purge going on in the officer class of our military. And I believe, no I know, that COINTELPRO is afoot.
This is not the time to delude ourselves about what is ahead. Most of you here already know and are preparing for it as best you can. My strongest advice is to become active in your community. And if at all possible, engage, befriend, and socialize with law enforcement, ex-military, and “friendly” government employees whatever the agency or department. The worst possible thing you can do is to allow yourself to be isolated, to become “the other.”
A final bookmark before this thread is archived, and before I leave.
The military, and that now means law enforcement everywhere, will have 10,000 robots to patrol city streets in a few years.
A true nightmare. God Bless you all.

Old Printer — Do you really believe that either “they” or “we” — and including the economy, the military, the politics of tyranny, and “domestic tranquility” in general — are going to remain status quo till 2023 while robots are being put into place? God knows what will happen *tomorrow,* let alone by then.
Even 2014 (when ObamaCare is _supposed_ to go into effect) is unsure at this point… who knows who will be the next President in 2016… political correctness (aka total INtolerance) is at an all-time high and climbing… many owners have lost, or given up on, their businesses… people are losing their jobs, their pensions, their homes, their health care (and their health) — and their HOPE — because laws telling them how to live are enfored under penalty of fines or imprisonment.
I repeat: “Do you really believe that our world as we know it will remain status quo while tyranny proceeds apace? Something has to give; neither America — nor the world, for that matter — will survive at this rate. And it won’t wait till 2023 for the hammer to drop.
I’m not going to debate this with you, it’s probably best if neither of us say more. Certainly I’m not trying to incite you to say something flammable (though I do suspect that’s your intent at times). In fact I must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed this a.m. or I wouldn’t be responding at all.
But give us a break here! In ten years we could be making our own robots on 3D printers. The faster “we” are driven to ground (or underground), the quicker “they” will fall — and they are desperate even now.
(Besides, they won’t last that long — so who’s worried about robots in 2023? Have you seen this? Even sheep butt heads occasionally.)
