  • I like Ross Douthat. In this day of screaming absolutes he always has a nuanced take on things. But even he says that the current campus crisis is something U.S. universities deserve.
  • And if anybody had doubts about what a bunch of whiny brats those “oppressed” university students at Mizzou are, check out their reactions to the slaughter in Paris. Whaaaaaa-waaaaa, nobody’s paying attention to US! Will the little narcissists ever feel shame?
  • Meanwhile at Yale the social justice pecksniffs protest a free-speech panel.
  • Australia is going to try out a hip, cool, and groovy cloud-based virtual passport system. Think the problem of lost passports is bad? Wait till you’ve experienced the airport joy of “the Internet is down” or “we don’t find you in our database” or “we’ve just been hacked.”
  • Okay, I get that paid patriotism is despicable. But why dump on the sports teams and not on the paying Pentagon? (H/T jed)
  • Have a Google account? Here’s how to see what they’re sharing about you. And how to change some of it. A nice nod in the direction of privacy. Nowhere near enough, but something.
  • The TOR Project accuses a university of selling us out for big fed bux. (Keep in mind that this allegation is unproven at this point.)
  • Inside the world’s largest “apocalypse shelter.”
  • Adolescent uses mom’s gun to eliminate a burglar from the gene pool.
  • Speaking of adolescents and criminals, remember the Barefoot Bandit? Though in his case crime doesn’t pay, in fact 20th Century Fox is paying most of his restitution.
  • We may not have flying cars, but we’ve now got personal jet packs! (Via S. who says, “I want.”)
  • Finally, have a look at a group you might not have known even existed: jailers for Jesus.

I don’t know, Kevin Williamson may be going overboard here, taking this stuff too seriously. It might not be an existential crisis after all. Maybe it’s just silly college shit as usual.

I wonder if TOR project has thwarted the FBI exploit yet?

I see some money-making opportunities in the Aissie pasport system. I think, once hacked, legit-in-the-system Aussie passports will be worth a lot more than those ‘Syrian refugee passports.’

No doubt people will pay good money to revoke real passports for people politicians while they’re travelling out of the country. I kinda hope the US goes virtual.

Jet packs would be fun for recreation, but I don’t think it would be much fun bringing home the groceries. 🙂 I still want my flying car. Unfortunately, I’m not sure where I’d land it in town. The grocery store parking lot here leaves much to be desired as a runway. The cars would have to be able to run on the roads too… until you could get to a takeoff point. I can see that here… but the idea of all those cars in a place like NYC rather boggles the mind. LOL They’d have to have some serious anti-collision technology.

Well, those sports teams didn’t have to take the money. Takes two to tango.

Now, you have me wondering where my fingerless gloves are. I hope I can forget again that I have them, otherwise, I’ll have to look around. 🙂

The FBI has denied paying CMU $1M to crack TOR for them. ArsTechnica reports:

For now, it’s not clear from the FBI’s statement which part is inaccurate: the specific payment amount or its involvement entirely.

Ambiguity – hate it hate it hate it.

Meanwhile, Roberta’s posting of a song from The Mikado put me in mind of a tune by Renaissance, and I was delighted to find the rendition from Live at Carnegie Hall on YouTube – in fact, the entire LP. With my turntable on the fritz, I haven’t listened to it for quite a while. Dreary days need sunny songs, sometimes.

The shelter is certainly impressive. However, I doubt a group of super-rich CEOs and idle rich would have a good skillset for TEOTWAWKI.

If I can’t have preppers, I’d rather hunker down with a village of subsistence farmers.

LarryA — That’s kind of what I thought, too. Well, that and, “How realistic is is that this thing will ever get a) completed and b) agreeably well run?” I noticed that it can be sealed off from within (naturally) but there wasn’t a word about who gets to determine when to seal up and what happens if some of the rich participants are outside at the time.

I always knew that the Ira Howard Foundation would end up in the CR, but they’re moving a bit faster than I anticipated. If the BBC or Al Jazeera start talking about a peculiar migration of brassy redheaded women into the Czech Republic, start loading magazines.

Also, General Šandor is clearly Col. Campbell in disguise.
