- How J.R.R. Tolkein found Mordor on the Western Front. Simplistic. But with the 100th anniversary of the unthinkable Battle of the Somme, apropos.
- Bill and Loretta. Yeah, I suppose it’s possible that they really did talk about their families, as Lynch insists with a wink-wink, nod-nod. If so, the conversation probably went like this.
- The icky privacy news. And the somewhat better. (H/T jc2k in comments)
- What a cesspit and an illegal tavern tell us about American revolutionary history.
- Anybody here still living in California? Plan to continue there after this? And how on earth is that background-check-and-registration-for-ammo going to work? Well, of course ultimately it’s not going to work (except in the sense of keeping people from buying cartridges, which is surely the real point). But I’m trying to think of the costs, the backlogs, the bureaucratic screwups, the unwillingness of FFLs to want to bother, the entirely new bunch of tax-suckers this will require. (It’s not clear from what I’ve read whether the b-c-a-r-f ammo provision will ultimately go into effect.)
- And after that load of disgustingness, we close — and cleanse our spirits — with some beautiful courage and inspiration from Mike Vanderboegh.

Amusingly, someone is already marketing a work-around for the “bullet-button” ban.
Tangentially relevant to our own Independence, I just discovered a string of Tom Barry interviews, the first of which is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM0RsCHkQfo#t=348.12517
Whoa. Mike’s description of the impossible task at hand and the honor that is due to those who stay true is powerful and inspiring. I’ll walk a little taller today.
I know a guy in California who is retired, and recently purchased a property and house which he has spent a lot of time and money on. People such as these, are they going to just abandon their investments? Same for shop owners. But the progressives just don’t care about what terrible choices they’re inflicting on people. And in some cases, probably no choice at all. I wonder how many gun shops in CA have shut down because it’s just too burdensome to try to do business there. I’m sure the State Patrol will be looking more closely at vehicles with CA plates coming from Nevada.
And, on the subject of the over-reaching government: Police use catheters, force to collect urine samples.
General Lynch, at anytime have you subsequently felt like you might be arkancided? And one quick follow up ma’am, how is everybody on the investigative team feeling; anybody thinking of shooting themselves after committing suicide, or perhaps choking themselves to death with their own bare hands, maybe a 25 year old having a heart attack? Everybody OK? How about family, any sudden rashes with difficulty in breathing, anything like that? Since you don’t have grandchildren I expect we’ll see you around when you finally do? And remember- “email, what email?”
I tend to think Rush is on to something re the B&L meeting. He has been watching this stuff for a long time. http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2016/07/01/we_re_being_played_by_the_clintons
And how on earth is that background-check-and-registration-for-ammo going to work?
“What a powerful new crime-fighting tool! We’re going to divert law enforcement resources to maintain a database populated with the names of people who pass numerous comprehensive background checks and thus are far less likely to commit crimes than people not on the list!”
If you’re not sure who is getting the shaft when the Clinton’s are up to something, it’s probably you.
The ammo thing in granola country (California, the land of fruits, nuts and flakes) reminds me of the long gun registry in Canada. The long gun registry failed because a majority of people simply said no. The government tried to put a brave spin on it but a lot of people refused to register and did selling and buying workarounds. I suspect this is what will happen in California. People who need ammo will get into taking long vacation trips (Las Vegas baby!) by car and/or start (if they haven’t already) reloading. The odds of checkpoints along the state line on every road leading into the state and searches of every car entering the state will not happen, the optics are simply too bad. Sadly it will be the guys in the gun shops trying to make an honest living that will get hit hardest and some will go out of business.
As far as asking when people will have had enough and leave, that’s the same as asking a frog how long will it be before he gets out of the pot as the water temp slowly rises. There may be a some bitching about this but I don’t think there will be a lot of protest. Whatever protest happens the well oiled government media spin machine will take care of. It is the same now as it was in Italy when Benito Mussolini was in power. He was nuts and did some nasty things but the majority did nothing to oppose him. Why? because “he made the trains run on time” and that’s basically what the politicians in California do.

Well, they’re trying anyway:
California’s bullet train is delayed three years, but will be cheaper to build

And if you believe the “but” part, I have some prime Texas farmland for sale.
Hah! My dear bride just gave me the book on Tolkien written by the NYT story’s author…ought to be a fascinating read!
As for California, I refuse to waste any more thought on the happenings in that land of fruits, nuts and flakes. Well, other than the occasional prayer for the faithful to depart as Col. Jeff Cooper did lo those many years ago!

Interesting piece on Tolkein. I had just assumed that much of the Mordor imagery was based on the environmental and psychological effects of the industrial revolution on certain parts of England. Of course, the rather unique thing about J.R.R. was his ability to successfully incorporate so many of his interests and passions into those stories.
Somme. The meaningless suicide of Western Civ.
prayer for the faithful to depart
I have a feeling “the faithful” are long gone from the Golden State. We got out in 1960. What you have left are MJR’s frogs.
California will get a lot worse, before it gets any better.
Great article on Tolkien.
As to Bill & Loretta, the New York Post headline captured it perfectly: “Snakes on a Plane.” http://nypost.com/cover/covers-for-july-2-2016/
For the NYT-challenged:

Hah! I hope so, LarryA, but I also pray some have been (and are being) converted and in the process of departure.
Still, I totally agree with you about things getting worse…makes me thankful to be here in the Lone Star State!

Good one, jc2k. Good one.
