Candles in the Wind

I haven’t done any art in a while. Painted these candles this afternoon from a photo I found online. This is a small study that took about two hours.

I was going to add caveats about not being a very good artist and being rusty and there being an irritating pentimento in the image, etc., etc., etc. (And I confess I always wanted to use the word pentimento in a real-live sentence. I don’t think I’ve heard it spoken aloud since my one-and-only Art History class many moons ago.)

But screw it. You know and will undoubtedly forgive all that.

Much of the new “I am no longer A Writer” blog approach might well be about aesthetics or spirituality, so I thought this was a good beginning.

That’s actually pretty good. Especially in two hours. And a lot of people would have trouble drawing a straight line.

Those are pretty cool to those of us who do need a ruler to draw a straight line. Color use is very good, though I skipped Art 101 for Music 101 so….

Interesting, to me anyway, is that I just picked up folk guitar again after four decades. Will try to learn a few contemporary songs from Gin Blossoms instead of old folkies and string band music. If you can get lost in art or music for a while, you can keep the angry feelings towards TPTB at bay for a while and not be so aggravated by the lies.

    Wow.
Claire, the beautiful simplicity of this piece is just staggering.

This is nice, Claire. I like the softer look of the painting (photographs are often too precise), and the darker, variegated color of the candles.

    Looks really fine, Claire.

I dunno, Steve. Reading today’s news often brings to mind a bunch of Woodie Guthrie songs. The rhyming of history, I guess.

Very impressive! You definitely haven’t lost your touch. Personally, I’m glad to see the artiste coming back to life.

Thank you all (and particularly E. Garrett Perry; I doubt I’ve ever staggered anybody before, except perhaps by tripping them 😉 ).

I’m posting art not to be praised (though I’m not going to turn praise down or anything, understand), but mostly to motivate myself. And to remind myself that it won’t kill me to put experiments, failed or otherwise, out there. Neither the world nor I should be surprised to discover I’m not perfect.

    Still … thank you.

    Beautiful.

Very nice. I’ve never heard the word pentimento before; thanks for sharing that. But I must confess that when I first saw it I read “pimento” and was wondering how an olive got into your picture!
