Wednesday afternoon miscellany

  • Seen — or rather not seen — conducting routine traffic stops in Houston.
  • What Cyclone Yasi would look like if it were over the U.S.. What odd timing that a storm that big actually is over the U.S. right now. But even folks in Chicago or Tulsa’s ice and snow should be grateful they’re not getting Yasi.
  • Per Jackie Juntti in a recent comments section: The MSM finally starts covering Project Gunwalker — feebly, of course — and Mike Vanderboegh sticks it to ’em again and again.
  • Some good dog news. A Labrador retriever can apparently be just about as accurate as a colonoscopy for detecting cancer.
  • And more on this week’s truly terrible dog story. Even a mainstreamer asks why the Whistler, BC, dog murderer didn’t just say, “Hell, no!”
  • I dunno. But doesn’t this sort of mad luxury always make you think the end of the gilded age is near? I mean, seriously. Caligula would have had a yacht like that if he could have.
  • On the other side of life: Mish Shedlock gives some sobering “investment” advice to a low-income retiree.
  • This has already been viewed a lot. But it’s a good antidote to all the bad: Weird Al Yankovic (who really is) “White and Nerdy.”

I love Weird Al’s work. If it weren’t for the need to cover genres of music that I just have no interest in, I’d quite possibly throw my own life at that calling. 🙂

I’ve taken to using “It’s All About the Pentiums” as a teaching vehicle in an intro-to-computers class. Students listen to it at the beginning and then again at the end of the course. They can informally measure their progress by how many more jokes they laugh at! And the thing about Yankovic is that in many cases (including this one) the jokes don’t wear out with time; if anything they get funnier with repeat tellings.

If my understanding of the man is correct, he’s also scrupulous about getting permission for everything he parodies. As a consequence–get this–it also sounds like people are generally flattered by it. Imagine!

Weird Al’s songs stand the test of time very well, often after the song being parodied has been forgotten. UHF stands the time-test fairly well(if you haven’t seen this, you should). Yeah-I’m told he not only gets permission, but cooperation if possible. I think a few groups claimed to know they’d made it big time when Weird Al took on one of their songs. I first heard his songs in high school, when he was on Dr. Demento…a lot of my Mental Audio track comes from Dr. Demento, and some of the Mental Video comes from Don Martin cartoons… I wonder if Weird Al TV is available on DVD?…

Jeff Cooper (RIP) repeatedly said that any armed man who covers his face is a legitimate target.

Weird Al has a kids book out now that he wrote for his daughter.

    “When I Grow Up!”

A really fun read, my kids love it.

If I recall correctly Caligula actually DID have a yacht like that. I beleive it was he who ordered two very large water barges built on a lake in Italy that were truely massive and floating hives of hedonistic glory.

Inflation…deflation. NIA takes one side, Mish the other. Which is right? No one really knows. However, it seems to me that Mish says one thing, but advises another. Example: if we are really headed for a deflation, then buying food now and freezing it for the future will tie up valuable funds just when the price of food would be expected to go down.

I’m leaning heavily toward the inflation scenario. I don’t think the Feds will give up money printing until the marginal value of money is less than the cost of printing it.

With that said, I agree with Mish about the need to stock up today to protect against price increases tomorrow. And buy a little silver, junk coins, just in case the inflation is worse than anyone can imagine. Oh yeah, and if you’re retired, plan to unretire. The Japanese oldsters have been going back to work to make ends meet.
