Free horse poop!

A load of free horse poop, courtesy of Freecycle

… courtesy of a local Freecycler. And her horse, of course. Not to mention several hours of shoveling and hauling and borrowing of trucks. AND it came with an invitation to come back any time for more. The neglected soil next to my garage will appreciate that.

The truck belongs to a cop from a nearby town and was acquired for this job by My Friend the Cop’s Mom, who shared in the bounty.

On the way from my house to hers, a different cop pulled us over for — of all things — a faded license plate. First words out of my friend’s mouth: “I’m [cop’s name]’s mom and this is his truck.” After that, the cop just smiled, said he was going to give [cop] a hard time, and didn’t even look at her proffered license.

I still say it’s a mild form of police corruption. But we wouldn’t have gotten a ticket for such an bitty little thing, anyhow. So what the heck. I’ll go with it.

Of course it is corruption just like the little bears that they use in King, Pierce, Snohomish Counties to identify themselves as cops or cop’s families.

It is a favoritism they can get away with and it stinks!

Where I am there’s a dairy farm about 30 minutes away that will give you free cow manure just for showing up…and no shoveling, just ask nicely and they’ll bring a front end loader around. Of course, we have an old family friend who knows people over there. Not sure if they’d give it to just anybody, I think they sell it by the truckload to farms

For the past couple summers I’ve made probably 50 trips out that way with the afformentioned friend (he has a huge garden). Never had any trouble with the police but one time we got in front of an obviously-from-the-big-city couple in a brand new topless BMW…and it was mighty windy that day. That was pretty funny.

I Just picked up four truckloads of horse manure myself weekend before last. Best of all there was hardly any shoveling involved! The guy who gave it to me had a front loader – and I used a 4 by 8 sheet of OSB and a tarp to line the bed – so I was able to pull/tip each load out. The manure’s all pretty much aged – but I’m just going to let it sit and compost til I need it this coming year. You probably have lots of earthworms where you live so this may happen naturally – but in my case I’m going to be seeding my manure pile with Red Wrigglers once I get it hydrated – those guys will break it down fast and they’re a great addition to gardening soil.

On the other side of the country from Florida, sorry. But anywhere you find horses you’ll find someone wanting to give away or sell horse poop for the garden. Try Freecycle. Or a neighborhood bulletin board. Or a garden center. Or a feedstore. Someone will know.
