Lighter side, self-protection, and better things

Well. That was depressing. So let’s look at the other side of life, okay?

  • First (and apropos of what I was just ranting about), there’s new help for self-defense against surveillance.
  • And (via LewRockwell.com), an advanced — if moderately pricey — option for snail-mail privacy. (And a review of the service.)
  • “She Don’t Like Firefly.” LOL. Are Joel and I at risk of blog incest? Dunno. But he does find some damn funny things.
  • Daniel Radcliffe. The more you learn, the more he seems like a cool, bright (check out him singing Tom Lehrer), together, young man — not to mention an actor who has the guts to push his boundaries. I mean, from Harry Potter to the mad young man in Equus? That’s a leap. Now he’s done it again. He’s opening as J. Pierrepont Finch in one of my very favorite old musicals How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Yes, Harry Potter. Dancing, singing, and acting the rogue. Hard to imagine anybody bettering the performance of the original Finch, Robert Morse. But gotta give Radcliffe points for the try. How to Succeed is so dated its had time to lose its charm and then regain it again. I would love to see this revival. I watched an itty-bitty Daniel Radcliffe the other day in an old BBC/PBS production of David Copperfield, and you know, he was good even then. But with the risks he takes, it’ll be fun watching him strive to find his limits.

I recently found “Surveillance Self-Defense” from another source and have been studying it daily as time allowed. Fascinating stuff, and well worth the time expended. Sort of like “What to do when you’re stopped by a cop”, only electronically.

There should have been a spoiler alert on the “She don’t like firefly” entry! Dang it! We’re only on episode 12 and we’re saving the movie until we finish the series.

Btw, I hadn’t heard of it before you mentioned it but now I want a browncoat shirt and a jayne cobb hat!

Heh, saw that the other day…it’s funny to me because I’ve pretty much been in that situation…there’s actually a girl out there that still thinks I dumped her because she said Firefly was lame. No big loss, she wasn’t anywhere near as nerdy or cool as the hottie in that video…

    BTW…’blog incest’? What’s that?

Winston — blog incest is something I just made up. 🙂 Joel links to me. Then I like to Joel. Then Joel links to me. Then I … well, after a while it all just gets to seem a little too inbred, dontcha think?

And you really — actually dumped a girl because she said Firefly was lame? Or she just thinks that?

LOL, Claire, at your typo regarding all that linking and like…..

I spent most of my life without computers, so naturally my best defense against any snooping is to just not have anything important on the comp that goes online, in the first place…and be as boring as possible once online, LOL……but I’m gonna go check that SSD site out to see what can be done about making the laptop as much of a hermit as it’s user is……

“And you really — actually dumped a girl because she said Firefly was lame? Or she just thinks that?”

I gave her the axe because she was crazy, and with few exceptions, not in a good way. That sort of crazy gets old pretty quickly…and trust me the LAST thing you want to do is tell someone like that “I’m leaving you because you’re friggin nuts and I’m half afraid that I’ll wake up one morning with you trying to cut me in an embarassing place with a rusty razorblade”.

So when she said Firefly was lame, and even went so far as to have some choice words about my favorite characters…I took the opportunity and went with it.

George — go for it. No need to h/t me, since I merely linked to Joel’s copy of it. And I hope that earworm isn’t too painful. 🙂

Winston — That sounds like an unusually good reason to dump a girlfriend — even if she had liked Firefly.
