Tuesday miscellany

  • In better earthquake news: a pair of dogs survive the tsunami. Not only survive, but show some smarts in doing so.
  • Pretty good article on datamining. What it can and can’t do. The author mentions Ghostery, which I already have on Firefox. He calls it tracker-monitoring software, but it’s really much more than that. Depending on your settings, it also turns off most tracking. It slowed my browser down noticeably, but it’s worth it.
  • Man with Fourth Amendment written on his chest sues the TSA. You go, Aaron Tobey.
  • Is the NRA finally developing some spine? That’s an NY Times free subscription link. Seems the Times fails to recognize Obama’s slimy editorial for the standard anti-gun trickery it is. “Common sense” gun control. Getting all “responsible” people to agree on the same agenda — as long as it’s the gun-grabber agenda. Needing laws to prevent the wrong people from getting guns (while totally ignoring the fact that such laws already exist.) Yep. Heard it all before.
  • Sigh. Does it seem to you that somebody “discovers Atlantis” every couple of weeks? If it’s not Atlantis, it’s Noah’s Ark, perched up on some mountain somewhere. And the next time somebody makes the same claim, all the newsies pretend not to notice it’s all been said before. Probably a good way to get media attention and funding, though.
  • Decent, thorough review of Atlas Shrugged, Part I. Doherty’s description is pretty much what I’d imagine for the movie. But oh my, I’m beginning to feel increasingly left out. Nobody’s invited me to any special previews. Sniff, snivel.

Ghostery = Neat! I just installed it. Have wondered what was going on behind the curtains, and by whom; now I know. Thanks.
(BTW, it hasn’t slowed me down noticeably.)

How does Ghostery compare to NoScript ?

    noscript.net

Thanks for the linky to Ghostery.

    Good question, Gooch.

Ghostery is aimed specifically at trackers, and with it you can either just observe who’s observing you or stop them from their snooping.

NoScript aims at some of the same snoops, but goes beyond that to prevent all manner of malicious scripts from being run on your computer.

I’m really not sure how much redundancy there is between them.

If somebody out there has a better or more comprehensive explanation/comparison, please post! Oh, also, I’ve never noticed NoScript slowing down my system, but Ghostery definitely does. When I load a page, there’s a slight pause (and sometimes more than a slight one) while Ghostery “does its thing” before showing a pop-up listing all the trackers operating on that particular site.

Add AdBlockPlus, Better Privacy, and some wise cookie settings and I’d say we’d all have about half-decent computer security. Oh yeah, and Linux, too. đŸ™‚

Noscript actually speeds up most browsing, because it prevents things like dancing-bunny banner ads.

I just added NoScript not to long ago, it’s taking a bit to get use to (what’s missing now, like comment boxes for example) but it hasn’t slowed down/changed Firefox for me……I like it otherwise…..

I also quit going to msn dot com, forever, too much unwanted stuff on there……
