Raising the black flag and …

Okay, she says, speaking metaphorically but with steely determination, dagger between teeth. That was a nice, long break. But now it’s time to raise the black flag and commence to slitting throats. —– I see discouragement all ’round. Certainty of economic doom. Fear that we’re about to lose our gun rights. Rumors of Obama preparing to grab a third term (rumors not eased by sudden cawing from the chattering classes that we should just dump that old Constitution thingie because it keeps the gummint from doing everything on its wish list*). Dread of the looming Obamacare regime. And on and…

Seven strategies for highly effective New Years resolutions

From Margie Warrell at Forbes: 1. Know Your Why. For a resolution to stick, it has to be aligned with your core values. We all want to look better or get richer, but your resolutions have to go beyond superficial desires and connect with what truly matters most to you. … 2. Be Specific. Resolutions to ‘eat better, get fitter, be happier, relax more or have better life balance’ are doomed for failure because they lack specificity. The more specific you are, the more likely you will be able to succeed. Describe your goals and resolutions in ways that allow…

Five things to accomplish in the new year

Sorry about the “lite” posting. I’m deadlining this week and next, so “lite” may continue for a while. Tomorrow I’ll be going on an expedition with a friend as part of the research for the BHM hide-a-gun article. Packing up the rubber boots, shovels, and camera now. So I thought I’d leave you with something worth pondering for a few days: What are the five major things you’d like to accomplish in 2013? Realistic things, I mean. (“I’d like to personally restore the Bill of Rights” doesn’t count.) I’m a bit stumped on this myself. I’ve come up with three,…

The sorrows of the rational empath

Talking with a number of people around the blog, I’ve discovered a lot of us are having a hard time right now. It’s probably gotten worse since we’ve been bombarded with (and even indirectly blamed for) the slaughter of the children in Connecticut. But for many of us, the times (and our moods) were already rough. Maybe the election triggered it. Maybe the incessant war-mongering of the last 11 years. Maybe the latest “blessing” from the Department of Homeland (Achtung!) Security. Maybe Christmas or the dark skies. But if angst and depression are contagious, they’re definitely going around. One grown…

Getting to simplicity

“By doing just a little every day, I can gradually let the task completely overwhelm me.” — Ashleigh Brilliant This is just a ramble. Not sure where it’s going to go … A long time ago I decided that keys — yeah, the kind on a key ring — would be a good measure of how successful I was at simplifying my life. I figured getting down to one key would mean I’d made it. At zero, I’d probably be living in a cave, and I’ve never hankered for that version of “simplicity.” Closest I ever got was two. I…

Tax sale: just how immoral would it be …

So. The county recently had a sale on properties foreclosed for non-payment of taxes. I’ve never paid attention to such things before, considering any form of tax sale or asset-forfeiture sale to be out of moral bounds. This time somebody pointed out that two of the parcels up for sale were hilltop acreages near the end of winding dirt roads. Not far from this neighborhood in miles, but a world away in possibilities. I went so far as to look them up online and do some sighing over them. Of course I didn’t consider bidding. But I admit that was…

Let’s have a freedomista, blog-supporter, Christmas, other times, and all-round business directory

I should have thought of this earlier. I really should have. But however belatedly, I think it would be great to create a sort of directory here at the blog for the businesses of supporters of Living Freedom. And other freedomistas. In particular I was thinking about businesses that do national or international shipping and might be good places to go Christmas shopping. But it goes beyond that. NFI on my part for any of these; I just think having a directory of businesses within our Living Freedom community is a good idea. Two come to mind immediately: Hi Mountain…

So very NOT a guru(and other thoughts on a rainy day)

Your comments on my “How did Grandma do it?” canning post the other day reminded me of yet another thing I like about this blog. Not just the always-interesting and helpful comments (though that, too). But that it’s okay not to know something. Um … lots of somethings, actually. I can be what I am — an ordinary person with all manner of gaps in my knowledge. I’m relieved to be able to get out here and be non-special in front of everybody. And by what I don’t know, I get to help bring out what you do. And there…
