Talk of forcing us into a cashless society has been around for decades. It’s very easy to tune it out as old news, something that’s going to remain a statist pipe dream forever. But it’s time to take this very, very seriously. The stage has been set. We’ve got central-bank desperation. Negative interest-rate policies. A police/surveillance state in which cash is more important to the authorities than any actual crimes committed. And the increasing ruthlessness of first-world states everywhere. I forgot to take the “donate” button down last night. It’s gone now and I hope I can keep my pledge to you that this will be truly The Last Fundraiser. It should be, barring disasters. Had to laugh, though. Yesterday morning, the total stood at an already-amazing $7,275. Three kind people decided they’d round that off to $7,300. Yes, each one specifically said their donation was for rounding purposes, and each counteracted the others’ attempts. Well, $7,350 may not be “round,” but it’s still a nicely balanced number. I’m in one of those moments when life is overly busy and complicated. Happens to all of us, despite our best intentions. (And of course some people — non-me people — actually like it that way.) In this case “busy and complicated” doesn’t imply bad. Not at all. Every part of the rush in this case is good. Is wonderful. Things in both life and work are progressing.
