Monday miscellany

  • Pat was the first commenter to notice: They caught Colton Harris-Moore yesterday. At least the Bahamian cops had the presence of mind and decency not to shoot him. (I expect most U.S. police would simply have blown him away, under the circumstances.) That boy. Neither monster nor hero. But oh, what a story! Might be silly, but I’m proud to have had a small connection to his adventures. (Yes, it’s a tenuous connection, I admit. But there’s a tad more to it than I’m at liberty to tell right now.)

  • And here’s an ordinary Joe who just lost 71 pounds in six months by going “caveman.” (I don’t intend to become a full-time drum-beater for primal nutrition, nor do I think weight-loss stories are what primal is really all about. But … well, I think it’s interesting & very positive & it seems a lot of you agree or are already way ahead of me.)
  • Why are 46 U.S. war ships and 7,000 Marines going to Costa Rica? Drug interdiction? The usual excuse, but these hardly seem the right tools for the job. Humanitarian missions? So they say, but WTF? How many starving Costa Ricans have you heard about lately? (Not to mention that “right tools for the job” thing again.) This comes at the same moment CR’s nearest neighbor, Panama, has erupted in violent, sometimes fatal labor unrest. And the unrest is centered (so far) on one of the provinces directly on CR’s border. Probably totally unrelated. Who knows? All you can say is the usual: the official story will turn out to be BS.
  • The labor unrest in Panama was sparked by something called Law 30. Yeah, I know nobody but Panamanians (and a few former tourists 🙂 ) care what the Panamanian government does. But bear with me a moment. It appears their legislature is taking a few lessons in bad government from the U.S. Congress. Law 30 pretended to be about aviation. Instead, nine separate bills were bundled into one and fast-tracked to passage while the legislature was surrounded by a protective ring of riot police. The new law bundle, among other things, lets public-works projects go ahead with scanty environmental review, increases penalties for fake ID, and makes it easier for cops to get away with crimes they commit while on duty. Hey, maybe there’s even something in there about aviation. It could happen. See? Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi (not to mention Newt Gingrich and dozens of other present and former legislative “leaders”) aren’t just domestic crooks and tyrants — their methods are a great inspiration to all the world!

Shame about that barefooted guy…though going to the Bahamas really wasn’t a smart move to say it nicely. I mean come on…it’s a black country. There aren’t exactly a whole lot of blond 19 year olds running around to blend in with. So when one crashes a plane on that tiny island, it’s only a matter of time…Florida, that would have been a better destination for a funny looking white boy to hide.

Yep, Winston. And not just color, either. Fleeing to an island (and one that has an extradition treaty with the U.S.) doesn’t seem too wise, no matter what color its inhabitants. Islands … they’re insular

Ah well. Still glad he didn’t get shot by the cops. And maybe now he’ll have some time to think about his wayward ways. Let him settle down and be the next Frank Abignale.

Karen — thanks for the helpful links!

I’m hoping he’ll pen a (no doubt bestselling) book on wilderness evasion complete with stories. While he made some dumb decisions along the way, it wasn’t for lack of skills.

I’m with ya on the “Do you care abouts”. Although I cared more about Lindsay Lohan back when she was younger and cuter and didn’t seem so determined to destroy herself. Or, since I don’t really keep up with celebrity news, maybe it is just a media plot to make her look bad? Obviously I’m just a sucker for damaged girls.

    Kent,

Yep, I know about your suckerhood for damaged girls. When I was young, I also had the much more common “sucker for bad boys” defect. Ugh! That’s a good trait to get done and over with. Funny how you can never “change” them — but being around them can change you — for the worse.

I still care about Lindsay Lohan because once upon a time she was an amazing young actress who showed promise of becoming one of the greats. Then she blew it all. Even though it’s hard to feel sympathy for her in her oh-so-determined self-ruination, I do feel sorry for her because her mother and father both appear to be so toxic that she doesn’t have any role models or any real adults to give her a hand. Not to mention perhaps her genes are against her. Looks like another case of a potentially great talent doomed to destruction.
