Dave’s Killer Bread (and killer story)

I know. Bread isn’t exactly the No. 1 item on a primal diet. In fact, its not anywhere on a primal diet. But once in a while even a caveperson needs a ham & swiss on rye. That’s a simple fact of life.

So there I was in this town’s mini-supermart — which is a neat little store, but definitely little — scanning the bread rack. The first (and for a while only) rye bread my eyes lighted on cost six bucks. Ack! It was an interesting, even funky, unknown brand. All organic and containing nothing but Actual Ingredients. Still … six bux. I kept on searching and eventually found the $3 loaf of familiar branded deli rye.

Then I looked at its list of ingredients. And back at the artisan loaf’s ingredients. And back at the deli loaf’s ingredients, which stretched on and on beyond all recognition. And I bought the artisan brand.

Not till I got it home did I notice that Dave’s Killer Bread has one heck of a life-change story behind it (video and pdf versions both available on that page).

Besides, the company supports Project Pooch (“changing lives, one dog at a time”). This is very cool. Too bad cavepersons don’t eat bread more often.

Sorry, you guys who live in the rest of the world, but unless you want to order online, Dave’s Killer Bread is available only in the Northwest for now.

We have this at Costco here in the Seattle area and I love it as well. There are a metric crap ton of calories in it, though.

Ah, but Todd, don’t you know that calories have no effect when you’re having fun?

(I admit … I never did read that part of the label.)

Jim B. … You mean cooking? Cooking??? Against my religion, I’m afraid.

Seriously, I love homemade bread. I love bread in general. And I really shouldn’t tempt myself with it, whether made by Dave or myself. I was doing great there for a while on the primal diet (no bread; no wheat; few grains). But now that the cooler months are here … sigh. Is there a better comfort food in the world than a really, really good slab of bread with butter on it?

Dare I mention that rye is amazingly good when dipped in melted chocolate chips?

Learned to love a heated salted fat bagel smothered with butter. Even without butter. It’s like a cheap fat pretzel.

The calories fall out when you slice it. Same with cookies, break them before eating, wait a sec for the calories to escape, and you’re good to go.

Oh, Bill … Don’t tempt me. Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay area, great sourdough bread is one of my favorite things. And I really don’t need to be hearing about another source of it right now. But mmmmmm …

No! No! No! Cavepersons. Bread. Do. Not. Mix.

Dave’s Killer Bread is developing a cult-like following here in Oregon. The stuff is AWESOME! Even my wonder-bread hubby will eat it. I haven’t had the Sin-Dawg, (like a giant cinnamon roll waiting to be sliced, as I understand it) but everyone goes cuckoo over that one, too, LOL! GOOD STUFF! They’ve got it in Alaska now, too!
