Friday miscellany

  • The Chilean miners’ story will no doubt become more amazing as details emerge of how they survived and organized themselves underground, particularly in those first weeks when they had scant hope of rescue. But here’s a freedomista angle the mainstream media doesn’t seem eager to cover. (Discoveries of multiple mistresses battling startled wives are much more titillating.)
  • You know how I sometimes like to link to “footnote people”? Well, how about a footnote building? And photos of it (pdf). It seems that some scammed investors didn’t notice (or thought it was an innocent error) that the oil-boom skyscraper was to be 480″, not 480′ tall. LOL.
  • Footnote people: Marie Duplessis, courtesan, intellectual, inspiration to artists — and dead at 23. Sidney Franklin, “el torero de la Torah.” I remember Franklin from late-night TV back in the 70s when he did analysis (often scathing) of Mexican bullfights. (Yep, I was at one time a fan of bullfighting. Even attended a big-screen pay-per-view to see the flashiest of them all, El Cordobes. Horrible cruel sport. But graceful and gutsy.) And speaking of footnote people, I admired her, as well.
  • Tip o’ hat to Mike in a recent comments section: Don’t be so sure that those Facebook “friends” are really friends. Could be feds. And oh goody! It’s another new federal agency we’ve never heard of — the Office of Fraud Detection and National Security. With a name like that, I expect we’ll see its budget grow and grow to give us ever greater protection.
  • But somehow, despite the best efforts of regulators and taxers everywhere, people keep inventing promising new stuff.

Finally, THANK YOU to everybody who’s ordered the new books (or intends to). Wow. Talk about making my day.

The Chilean miners who chafed at the psychologists’ help and managed to get things done better for themselves can be compared to communities working better alone than through top-down or authoritative control.

I saw El Cordobes bullfight once on screen. I also remember Patricia McCormack, the first American female bullfighter, who fought in Mexico. She didn’t have the smoothest style, but she did love the sport. She also wrote an autobiography about her life.

That article about the miners vs. the psychologists just gives me even more reason to admire those miners.

I was able to watch the last part of the rescue through a live video feed, and narrated it through chat for a friend who couldn’t watch. We both had tears in our eyes. Those men are heroes now.

Creepy news. (Is there any news about Blackwater or Monsanto that isn’t creepy?) But the story you link to appears to overstate the connection between the two companies. I’ve only skimmed The Nation’s article so far. But I did search for all references to Monsanto, and while there are a lot of them, I don’t see anything to indicate that M bought B in any sense of the word.

I know Blackwater’s for sale, though. And lord knows who might want to buy such an entity …

Re the bus dwellers in Moab … couldn’t help but notice that census workers were responsible for ratting these folks out to the county.

All the talk in the article that the problem is that the buses are in an ag area, not a residential area, is also smoke-and-mirrors, and I’m wondering why the reporter didn’t see that. Even if the buses were parked in a res area, the county would still try to drive them out over issues of permits & regulations.

The fact that they have a link, some kind of connection, is still scary. You’d have to admit that they have the same kind of mentality toward the “unwashed”. And whoever does buy Blackwater (ne Xe), will likely do so, through however many dummy corporations they feel necessary. Again, whoever does buy Blackwater, will have the same “philosophy” with them.

As for the dwellers, well, the thing that got to me was the county’s complaint about no sewer facility being around for the dwellers. Even though one did mentioned using a self contained composting toilet. As long as they’re not harming anything or anyone, they should be left alone.
