Thursday miscellany

  • You really can’t apologize for saying something like this. Well, I guess you can apologize for anything if you’re a politician. But we who were targets of your disdain will always know you meant exactly what you said in the first place, bubba.
  • And you know that “civility” the Dems are all in favor of? Well, not so much for themselves, you know ….
  • Arizona gets it right.
  • Found this while pondering quirks of human nature for one of yesterday’s posts. Turns out that old expression “You’re only as old as you feel” might have some validity. Or maybe better to put it “You’re only as old as you think.”
  • Just watched a Korean film called Mother. One of the best noir thrillers ever. Watch it with subtitles or wait ’til they remake it in Murrican (and ruin it by casting some glamor babe as Mother and giving it a tidily wrapped-up ending. Probably involving a machine-gun shootout).

Looks as if Wyoming may be the next state to have “Vermont” carry, even though the state would still issue “permits” for those who wish to have them for states that might still reciprocate.

    Bare facts are here: http://legisweb.state.wy.us/2011/Digest/SF0047.htm

It is out of committee and ready to go for a vote – but I don’t know if it goes to the house or senate first.

Keep your fingers crossed. One less “law” that needs breaking.

    My fingers are crossed.

I’m wondering how to get mine across country safely when I come traveling West this year. It’s not “permitted” and I don’t want it stolen if I were stopped for any reason. (Though it might be “confiscated” in some states even with a permit.)

A feel good story on PJTV Trifecta (free access) about a grandfather who was trying to get to his dying grandson’s side, no thanks to TSA, but many thanks to Southwest Airlines. Link: http://www.pjtv.com/?cmd=mpg&mpid=105

BTW Claire, did you get any notification about the Tribute to Aaron Zelman? I sent one, although not through the comments. I imagine that you would like to mention it.

I realized how old I’M getting when I heard Jack Nicholson say (the other day) that it was undignified for him to chase after women in public anymore…..I was thinking “what happened, he got old & I didn’t?” delusional thoughts…

I admit I’m a bit haunted by the comments made by the young man who was carrying the day of the AZ shooting, as he was coming out of Safeway he had a clear shot to take the lunatic down, and let his brain allow him to not pull his gun out, due to fear he’d be misunderstood as to who he was and what his intentions were…..He made some good points, which caused me to rethink what I thought was my sure response…I hate when that happens….

    rustynail,

Thank you. That’s one tremendous story. May the TSA be even more damned than it already is, and bless that Southwest pilot. Here’s another link to the original print version of the story:

    http://www.elliott.org/blog/southwest-airlines-pilot-holds-plane-for-murder-victims-family/

    and here’s another:

    http://travel.usatoday.com/flights/post/2011/01/southwest-pilot-holds-flight-for-grieving-grandfather/138762/1

(though the commentary on your link is definitely worth watching).

Here’s what the boyfriend did to Caden Rogers:

    http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_17070728

You wonder how anybody could do it. But I also wonder whether Caden’s mother knew what kind of a man she was with and, if so, why she stayed and put her child in danger.

And yes, I did get your notifications — both of them — about the tribute. And I did respond via email. I haven’t done anything with it yet because I was trying to think of something useful to add before I did. But so far … Aaron is just too complex in my memories for me to find anything adequate to say.

I hope you won’t mind if I put your link right here: http://jpfo.org/tribute-04.htm

naturegirl — Can you link to that young guy’s comments? I haven’t heard that. I read about the man who was carrying and decided not to draw his gun once he realized that the person holding the murder weapon at that moment was one of the good guys who had wrested the weapon from Loughner. But didn’t know about another concealed carrier.

Sort of answers the question, though, of where those armed Arizonans were, doesn’t it?

Hey, MamaLiberty — That’s great and interesting news — especially if it’s continuing to proceed after the Tucson shootings. Keep the world posted!

My ex-significant sweetie (who occasionally reads this blog and might have something to say) was one of the people who worked on the original “shall issue” permitting in Wyoming — and though that caused him to come to verbal blows with libertarian purists, he always said that everyone involved understood that shall-issue permits were just a prelude to eventual Vermont carry. Took a while, but it sure would be great to see it happen.

Claire, I have searched and searched all over for that…..it originally aired on tv shortly after more details started coming out (not immediately after it happened)…..I’m in the process of contacting the local stations to see if they can find it…..

He was young, mid-early 20s, and pretty torn up about the last minute confusion he experienced…..he was about to leave the store when it all happened nearly right in front of him, so he wasn’t outside Safeway…..

I can’t believe it just vanished, it’s out there somewhere…..

Ok, this is the edited down version of the clip I saw, it’s missing the other half of his comments….but the setting and interviewer is the same, sorry everyone has to sit thru the weird sheriff again before it gets to that part (LOL)….

Seems like that’s the closest I’m gonna get to finding it, too bad the rest of it’s “vanished”…….

naturegirl — Thank you. I’m sorry you had to dig for that, but I’m glad you did. You and I were thinking of the same young man, but I apparently hadn’t heard his entire statement.

Sounds to me as if he made a very sharp and terrifying decision — which the media is trying to make sound more simplistic than it was (at least that’s my take on it). I can see why he’d have feared somebody might think “second shooter” had he drawn his gun. But I got the impression from the “worst thing that’s ever happened” clip that the media types were trying to make it sound simply like “guns bad” — as if the mere act of possessing a gun made Zamudio dangerous to others and himself.

I can see putting a lot of different interpretations on those events, but can anybody say he made the wrong decision? Hope I never have to make that sort of choice.

No problem, like I said, it’s kinda haunted me so I have searched around for it before today…..just not as seriously as today, LOL…..

Unfortunately, the last link that had part of what I had seen, also included the rest of the “speel”….to bad they just didn’t run all Joe had said, instead; he brought up some powerful doubts/questions that caused him to rethink using his gun – BASED on the potential (immediate) reactions to his doing so, on what might have happened if he had…..

I think he’s a fine example of not only a responsible gun owner/carrier, but he handles himself well in general….the more attention he gets can only benefit the advancement of “the other side” (the responsible side) of possessing a gun….

I think Zamudio handled himself appropriately and praise him for not shooting someone just because they held a gun. Citizen gun carriers are held to a much higher standard than the LEO that “work” for us. If had shot the wrong person, he would be prosecuted to the ends of the earth.

I believe LEO response would of been to eithe hang-back to make sure they (leo) weren’t in danger before securing the scene, or to just shoot everyone holding a gun, or looking like they were holding a gun, or were looking like they would consider holding a gun.
